discussion about ashley ripping off peoples music...pretty interesting..do grab the mp3..combination of coldplay "square one" and ashlee "arms wide open"ITS THE SAME SONG!

one Godawful band and one beyond awful bubblegum pop star ...guess they have the same songwriter,.sounds about right.

So this Ashlee Simpson thing has made me become obsessed... Today I combined the 2 songs into one. The are just a couple of differences.... "square one" was at 124 and "eyes wide open" is at 126. I met in the middle and now they are both 125. Coldplay plays an extra measure at the end of the chorus, i removed that... other than that, they are the exact same song... i did nothing to the key or the structures. Enjoy!

You are right
Did you check the credits to see of they have the same songwriter or if they sampled each other?

it's interesting...but not unbelievable.
there are a lot of pop songs out there that seem to follow the same form, same chord changes, tempos, etc. It could have been ashlee liked the chord progression Coldplay was using and decided to do the same...or vice versa. Many musicians/composers do it all the time. Look at how similar jazz/blues changes are to eachother. There's only 12 notes in western music, so there's bound to be some repetition. You can't copyright chord progressions, thank god. :)

i actually like Coldplay though...is that a bad thing
(but not Ashlee)

For some reason I dont have the time to listen to Ashlee Simpson's music.
But I do have the time to listen to Hilary Duff's :D

That's much more than a chord progression similarity. You can say a lot more than just "they sound alike" (come to think of it, the entire X&Y album sounds like one long song in that respect if you ask me, but I digress...)

The songs "Louie, Louie" and "Wild Thing" have "the same chord progression" But atleast they sound different. Different tempo, played differently, different style.

This Ashlee Simpson song and the Coldplay song actually have the same little nuances and stuff in the background down to the drums and lead riffs. I don't know who ripped who, or what happened exactly here but it's shit like this that makes me hate popular music.

That just goes to show how pathetic and lazy pop musicians have become.

This is nothing new. Listen to Spirit's 'Taurus' and then to Led Zepp's 'Stairway To Heaven'. A complete rip-off by LZ.

Well it's no suprise. I IV V or variations of it is no suprise in pop music. It's the oldest argument in pop history. If you repeat the same formula for so long, eventually something will sound the same.

Look at Nickleback, a perfect example of a formula band designed to sell records. If you play two of thier hit songs side by side, you'll see that they are the exact same song. Same chords, same breaks, same bridge...even the same song lengths.

It's impossible to "invent" a song, you simply repeat and reshape something you might of heard as a child, a baby, or at any point really. That's why someones musical influences will have a profound effect on there writing ability. It's kind of a producing 101 thing.

However, I haven't heard the song nor do I really care to at this point.

Besides, I can safely say that Ashlee Simpson won't be breaking any musical boundries throughout her carreer, so if she needs to steal a song, then by golly, let the poor girl have her fame.

Like jimmiebananas said, this isn't a similar song because of the chord progression, music is always the same, blah blah blah argument. This is the SAME SONG (lyrics aside)! WTF?!

I was looking into that one day and found this bit at songfacts.com
"The acoustic intro was borrowed from the song "Taurus" from the band Spirit, who toured with Led Zeppelin when they first played the US. The band Spirit has acknowledged this, and is okay with it. (thanks, Conrad - Los Angeles, CA)"

That mp3 above is sick

I've always thought Coldplay's songs all sounded the same. At least some of Ashlee Simpson's stuff has different character....

I've heard SO many rip-offs I don't know where to begin. The first half of the chorus of "I believe I can Fly" sounds just like "Can't Stop Loving You (Van Halen)". I keep thinking Lindsay Lohan's "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)" sounds like Coldplay, but.... And so on.

what about Eminem's popular song from that 8-Mile movie...all I can ever hear is The Fresh Prince of Bell Air theme song.
They have a commercial running on TV (for IPod i think) and as soon as that Eminem song starts up I start singing..."In West Philadelphia, born and raised...." :p

But then again, I think most rap music you can do that with.
