Hear so much talk about using compression, I almost think i have to automaticly, even if my ears are telling me its fine as is.

Does it need compressing? Maybe less is more? Lately I've been using less and less of everything and it's paying off, I think.

Maybe try using a compressor like GComp with a visual on the waveform as you're working?

Yeah man, I hear ya, I guess I'm just having a hard time really understanding using compression ....I use none at all on the guitars while tracking...a little on the bass guitar...my original mix I did use a compression plugin in reaper (the one that comes with reaper),created a send and routed the rthym guitars to it ......also had compression on the master track. This last I mix killed those sends and only had the compression on the master, again a Reaper plug using a preset ...I think called super solid or something like that....Hear so much talk about using compression, I almost think i have to automaticly, even if my ears are telling me its fine as is...I am gonna go back and experiment more with this, thanks for taking the time to listen and comment again, I value your opinions on this stuff!

I think you're overthinking it. For one, do whatever you want to do, but I've never found an instance in which an overdriven guitar tone, like what you have here or what I typically use, would ever need compression. It's already naturally compressed via tube meltdown or sim. Look at the waveform of an overdriven guitar track vs a clean track. One looks like a flat blob, one looks dynamic. The overdriven blob is already naturally compressed. Adding more normally can't be doing any good. If you're heavily compressing individual tracks, and then hitting it again with a master compressor/limiter, it can be overkill. There's a fine line. To me vocals like compression, bass likes compression, drums like a little compression, guitars like none. Use just enough to get the results you want with each track to make a good mix, then you can master compress for cohesion and loudness.

it used to be in the reel to reel days...you used compression when tracking so you wouldn't overload the tape track too much. Then when mixing you might have slapped some on the vocalist that didn't have a clue about mic technique and the bass player that thought his Squire bass was consistent thru out the neck.
With digital recording, I don't hardly ever see a need for compression when tracking. For mixing, it generally can help smooth out tracks that jump in and out -volume wise... that crappy bass guitar ??. But the less compression you use, the more dynamic sounding the recording and typically more lifelike and punchy... as a generality (not talking about compression as an effect). That's why I commented earlier..that if you can't hear it, it is probably set right. When GregL heard it right off the bat, tells me you're hitting it too hard. He shouldn't hear "compression".

Thanks for the great advice Greg and mixmkr....going to re mix this thing with a fresh approach, Im hoping that th eguitar tracks themselves are not to turdish tonewise to begin with.....

Ok, gave this turd another coat of polish......no compression on any guitar tracks, just drums, bass , and vocal; as well as master to try and get a cohesive sound...I don't know...heres a link:

I'm not making comparisons to anything previous...just by memory, but this seems punchier and more space between the instruments. I'd call it an improvement for sure.
I'm afraid to bring up the clicky-ness on the bass sound. Probably just a preference.
Good improvement overall

I like this mix. Guitars sound great to me this time around (sorry, didn't catch the prior mixes). Drums are sounding good.

The bass does really have some click to it, doesn't it? Kinda cool, but unusual. It's a fine bass line though. Well done man.

I only heard the last mix version...and yeah, it's a fun cover. Like your version of it.

The playing/riffs are good, but not sure if the Wah sound works...seems to take the song away from the punky flavor when it kicks in...just my take, (and I don't dislike Wah sounds).
Have you tried doing the lead without it to see what it sounds like?

Thanks , I think it is a little punchier as well, used a rickenbacker for bass, play with a felt bass pick, and I play pretty agressivly, so I think my poor technique may be causing some of those clicks...thanks for re-listen, appreciate the feedback

Thanks HM,I do like a odd noise now and again from bass, like finger squeak, but yeah, I was gettin on it pretty hard:rolleyes:

Been thinking the same thing about the guitar solo myself miroslav, gonna track a couple diffrent solos this week to see what it sounds like....thanks for listening!

Good version queeps. Those early stones tunes are always good candidates for covering. The guitar tone is a bit ill defined, but I loved the wah. You do a great vocal on this though, you got that certain recognizable quality on your voice that I like. Fun cover

Ha , thanks Bulls , never thought I would get a prop for my vocals, Actually envisioned what it would sound like with a combo of Iggy Pop, Bowie, and Elvis Costello as the lead singer :drunk:....Was not that happy with the guitars on this, if I was not kinda burnt on it, I might re do it with a real sparse backing...1 rhythm guitar track, 1 bass, 1 guitar solo...I think I have like 4 seperate tracks of rhythm guitars.....thanks for the listen, look forward to checking out your new one when I get home from work today!

Nice one formervariaaxeman,
I enjoyed the wah (mine has a scratchy pot at present so can't use it - & I miss it).
sounds much better with the guitars less compacted.

Thanks Ray & Paul! Was fun to do....trying to dig something from the Tom Jones catalog for my next cover.....
