As basic as it gets: using a Qwerty keyboard

Hi, I'm a complete beginner who has used Acoustica Mixcraft to do a little looping, and now I'm getting ambitious.

I'd like to create some tunes but I don't own a music keyboard. Does anyone know if I can use my computer's qwerty keyboard to play really basic melodies? As in download a freeware synth or similar and then use my PC's qwerty keyboard to play VERY basic melodies and riffs (not the "just one touch and the tune plays" stuff), like a basic piano keyboard. Sorry if this question has been asked before.

Failing that, I'll have to put my hand in my pocket.
