whats the best all around tube pre amp...for recording! any input will do????
  Dr. David Beowulf

The lack of metering on the Art Tube MP is really annoying. The lack of QC on the Blue Tube is scary...

Maybe a Behringer?

Once you learn that Art, lack of meters wont screw you too much....the Art is just a better all around preamp in that price range....

The Art "Studio" MPs have{analog VU} metering, they are about $125.00.
Also has a limiter built into it .I've very rarely used the metering on it ..I set it by ear and use the recorder's meters.
I dont have one anymore but they are a good deal for the money.

Bellari MP105

Another possibility for a budget pre-amp is the Bellari MP105.
They typically sell for $100 or under at Guitar Center.
Be careful though, after spending some time with mine I could
hear a 60hz "hum", so I used an Ebtech Hum Eliminator to help
solve that problem rather than bothering to return the unit.
Maybe I just received a faulty wall-wart, YMMV.

Joe Meek

I've been using the ART for a few years now, It's been good, but the JOE MEEK VC3Q is my pre-amp of choice now!

It's fantastic sounding....

Just my oppinion, (I still use the ART Tube MP when recording multiple tracks.

Dom Franco

Dom, I also have a V3Q and like it. Even though it's not technically a tube
pre-amp, it seems to make a vocal fatter like one, especially when the
EQ and compressiion are engaged. What mikes do you run through it?

The blue tube is more like a dual mp with a sovtek 12ax7 So it is better than an art dual mp with a phillips tube. it also has led metering which doesnt get pegged and the whacked out of adjustment. the blue tube was a nice fit for me because I have two ballanced inputs on my korg d8. but a tube mp is really all you need. I reccomend getting a groove tubes replacement for it because the current tube inside just isnt that good.

Ive got gt12ax7 white labels in the blue tube and my levelar and they now sound a world better to me.

how about the Behringer MIC2210 (somethng like that)?
I read some good reviews on them on this BBS before.....

I think I will get the Behringer one. nice features. good price.

DBX its as recognized brand. have to be better then art, even without the meter. (I like the meter in the art one)

I think art sound can be BORED (weary) sometimes.
maybe its just my concept about art brand because their fx procesors.

I cant have both to make a comparission; sometimes the name of the brand is important.

The Studio Tube MP is selling for $125 now? Well, that might be worth it, if the Tube MP's somewhat underemphased high-end is what you want.

Tube Preamps

I recently bought a Korg D1600 (sweet ass machine) and I want to warm up my distortion coming out of my Zoom 505II. I know to get a tube preamp, but where in the chain do I insert it? Guitar-Tube Preamp-Zoom 505II-Mixer-D1600 or Guitar-Zoom 505II-Mixer-Tube Preamp-D1600? What is the best way to get a tube sound recorded?

Thanks for any help.

guitar-zoom-preamp-D1600 (the mixer is not necessary)

I use a mixer at that location to insert another multifects unit that has two channels so as to have two harmonies when using a harmonizer or just one and a chourus.
