The Tritons have always been expensive but I think they were the best sample-playback synth/sequencer combo for a long time. Now I think the Yamaha keyboards have better sounding filters and are much better priced. The Motif is expensive but the S80 is a great deal if you like the action of the keyboard.
The Kurzweil machines have been over-priced too. All these boards are really good and it would take somebody years before they fully exploited the sounds, but I see them going for $3000 and up. That's rediculous. I've owned enough synths to know that after a number of years they sound dated, lose their re-sale value, and something better comes along that's cheaper and more appealing. That's what I love about guitars, I never regret buying them because they only sound better and better as they get older.
I have drum machines that have lost 90 % of their value.....that's just the way it is.

yeah definitely. i just get a little frustrated to see so much hype on triton keyboards. The sounds really never impressed me. I do like the synths in it...leads are also really nice...and the sequencer is damn simple and effective. But is it really as good as everyone makes it out to be? I was even told before in response to talking negatively about it "Its not for piano players". then what exactly is it for.....people who cant play and like to think they can...?
+'s - great synths, ease of use, sequencer, sampling.
-'s - HORRIBLE piano, $$$$$$, drum patches arent very expressive, everything sounds like it was made on a triton these days.

I'm real happy with my triton...I'm not a piano player, nor do I think I am!!
I use the keyboard for lots and lots of sequencing which is does well. I have not begun to exploit its sampling features just 'cause I haven't had time to learn it.
I am a drummer, and I agree that there is a LOT of limitation as far as the drum
kits, almost every other week I say to myself, "I need some toms, I need some toms" but overall I am real happy with it.
I will agree also that lots of stuff sounds like it was made on a triton, probably because it was!
If Korg keeps making expansion cards, I feel it will keep the board "fresh" even though I wish it would hold more than 2. What's more, the church I work at has an XP-80 and even though there are a lot of sounds I wish I had on the triton, the sequencer's ease of use and flexibility keeps me without regrets...even though I went to the store to buy an XP 80 but they were out and the Triton was on sale!
Like every other piece of equipment that gets talked about on this BBS, it mainly depends on what you're using it for and what you want. Assuming that one day I'll have the money, I can always buy (or record) samples and load them in the triton.
In conclusion, as a triton owner, I do not deny some of the downsides that y'all have mentioned, but I'm a happy camper with my axe!

I am a bedroom DJ who has recently decided to get into music production. I wanted to buy the best because I know how stuff gets outdated. I wanted something that was very versitile and expandible. I ended up buying a Yamaha MOTIF 8. Its a little cheaper than the Trition and it supposedly is just as expandible.I've had it for about two months now and I'm just beginning to make some headway on it. Some may think that it was a very expensive purchase, "a waste of money." I don't think so. I think it has soo much stuff that I will struggle for the next year figuring it out. Then what???? Then I have it figured out and that is the first step to mastering it. I'm very excited about what the future brings, and I feel that this was a smart purchase. If you wanna win big you gotta play big.

Congrats on the purchase. I've got a friend down here that wants to get a Motif, as well. From what I've seen, it is very good comp for the triton and very similar in its features.
The only thing I would say to folk is that if you are not a keyboardist and you are using the board for sequencing and stuff, IMHO it's better to save the money and get the smallest one of the series. It is VERY rare that I wish I had more than the 61 keys I've got...thanks to octave changing. Sometimes a little more tedious, but worth the hundreds of $ saved.

I agree that unless you are a piano player there's no sense in getting a big board. I own the Triton and though I'm no pro or piano player, I'm very satisfied w/ it. People like to talk about how it sounds flat but to me it's more that adequate, may need some tweaking here and there but I think it's great.

I actually got to play around with a Yamaha Motif at Sam Ash, And I must say it sounds and works better then any of the triton Synths. NO DOUBT!!!! It might be my next Purchase

tritons are definitely over rated.. weak sounds and they cost a bloody fortune.. the motif and rs7000 are way cooler imo.. and cheaper even.. damn hype
