Are there any rules for drum room mics?

There seems to be tons of talk here about mic choice & placement for close drum mics & overheads, but less talk about room mics. I understand it is pretty common to use room mics for drums. Is this technique totally dependant on the room characteristics & the sound you're after, or are there some basic rules to start with (ie. compression, mic choice, placement, etc.)?

Yeah, keep the mic's away from the walls, or anything else that sound can bounce off of.
