Are rack mixers the way to go?

I'm thinking of getting a rack mixer to mix synth modules and so on (line levels, no mics/guitars) into my PC soundcard. It's save a bit of space ,plus I wouldn't be paying for stuff I'm not using.

Does anyone know any good rack mixers? I'm looking at the Behringer (!!) RX1602. Is it noisy?

I've also looked at the Roland M2000 digital rack mixer...

Any ideas?

I used a Studio 12R for a Looong time before I got my digital mixer: easy to use, 8 XLR channels, mounted in a rack with the amp & BBE, and was good for live sound (duo or trio) as well as analog recording. Great price, too. But only 2 band EQ which can be important live but not so much when recording. They are a bargain.

Hmmm. Nice, but I don't need mic pre-amps, as I don't do any recording at home. Nor eq as that's all done in the PC...

I just need something to mix together synth modules (stereo line level) into my soundcard analogue inputs. Simple really!

That's why I was interested in the RX1602 - it has 8 stereo line channels, ideal for putting multiple lie-level inputs into my soundcard. But that Roland one is digital...mmmm. Decisions decisions.

I bought a Berhringer 1602 a couple of months ago.

Great little rack mixer; killer price ($99 new at MusiciansFriend). Not noisy at all... very very quiet. I'm using mine with an ART TPS2 pre-amp and a TCElectronic M300 FX box.

Just got the new issue of "Recording" magazine yesterday and was pleased to see they confirm my useage. They also loved it.

As with any gear, make sure you can easily return it if you don't like it. But I'm sure pleased with mine.
