Well are they?

If there is a brand that makes better mixers, post'em up!

Uhhhhh

Well it depends what you need the mixer for! Are Mackie's the best mixers in the world for large arena tours? No, I don't think so. Are they the best if you're recording a large-budget album that requires 50 or more tracks? No, I don't think so. But are they good if you need say 8-24 tracks for recording or live sound? Well then yes they are probably a very good buy.

Okay, well check out these models,
1402 Pro: 6 mic/line inputs, 2 aux sends, 3 band EQ
1642 Pro: 8 mic/line inputs, 2 mic/stereo inputs, 4 aux sends, 3 band sweepable EQ

Why I Like Mackie's Even Though I own An Alesis S24 &S32?

1 word."Preamps"! Are they the best? I don't know. Are there
better mixers out there? There will always be a mixer thats better than this 1,anutha' better than that 1 etc.etc.
Did I answer your question? No! What should you do?
Go to a gear shop,compare specs,prices,determine tracks needed,auxes,pre's,s/n ratio,faders,out's&inputs,ease of use
and compatibilty with your existing set-up,ask questions then decide which mixer is best for you!
Good Luck!

We bought a CFX-16 recently, here's something to look out for...

The new VLZ pre-amps are only on the VLZ mixers. So if it doesn't say VLZ in the name, or if it's an old mixer, it won't have quite the noise floor that the new ones do.

But it's a low noise floor anyway. I was just hoping to get even lower...

Happy anyway!

Sonusman would point you to a Heath&Allen (or Allen&Heath?). He's a big fan of their mixers...

Yes, Allen & Heath are somewhat pricier than Mackies, and they are very, very good.

Also looking for opinions

I'm also looking for a mixer. Anyone has an opinion on Behringer or Phonic over Mackie?

Again, do a forum search here on the word Behringer, you'll get all the info you need.

i think...

that allen&heath and mackie are the ONLY way to go for the compact mixers. 1604 and the mixwizard. your choice on how much you want to $$$.

in the 8 buss, spirit and mackie seem to be the cheapest, spirit really takes the honours there for price/spec ratio.

and in some large budget project studios, some people use a mackie*8 with an assortment of outboard pre amps. some use soundcraft, allen&heath or spirit boards.

and in pro level studios they use SSL, Neve, and a hell of a lot of other $2000/channel consoles.

what are you?

The only way they have an edge over Mackie is in their cost, otherwise it is "No Contest" with Mackie winning by miles. I have travelled this road over the last couple of months, originally thinking Behringer, but I soon learnt that if I wanted any hope of decent recordings I would have to go with a Mackie, Soundcraft or similar........there ain't no room for compromise if you want good results. Better to learn the lesson before spending little bucks and expecting a big buck sound.
