Are clip on drum mics really better?

Do you notice any/much audible difference between the e604s and the MD504s? I have a collection of the 504s that I've been using forever.

I'd love to find clips for these for when I'm screwing around and want something quick.

If you have enough 504's to suit your needs, I wouldnt bother looking for any more drum mics...Watch some music videos and take notice of how many bands you see using these mics....

Either will work. The 609 will do fine on rack toms, though I still prefer a 604/904.

I know, I've got a 609, We were talking clipons though.... I actually am considering selling my 609. I tried it once and liked a 57 better.
Always nice to have variety around though. The 604 on the other hand is pretty damn reasonable as far as clipon mic's go and it sounds like it has alot of fans. I wouldn't mind freeing up some 57's either.

I feel the opposite about this...I like my 609 on snare better than any mic that I own...and I ALWAYS use the 604's on toms....though i have used my beta52 or SM7 on the low toms on occasion...

How do you position the 609 on the snare? Pointing in from the side but not over the head or do you take a pretty downward angle and bring it over the head.

Would I be correct t assume you have a 57 and a I5?

Ya I need more now only have 3. I like the 57 better on most things than the I5 my self, but I have been using the I5 on the snare. It seems to have a bit more hi end than the 57. I looks like it could take a wack better too

I do not have an I5 but several 57's...

I position the 609 to the side of the snare. I put the bottom of the grill about an inch at most above the rim and tilt it toward the center of the snare...I have noticed very minimal bleed from the 609 as well....far less than on a 57. Also, because of the slim profile of the 609, I can often fit it between the snare and the rack toms and still be able to keep it out of the way of drum sticks....

Cool. Thanks. I might give it a try, although I am happy with my I5. Your right about tight though. I put a 90% plug on the mic cable for the snare, and I can just fit the tail of the mic up between two of the toms. With a regular cable I could never do it. I don't have an issue with bleed using it, I didn't really have a problem with a 57 either, likely because of the positioning. But every thing to do with that setup from the stand on up is critical in getting that position to work. Our drummer has a 7 peice and it's as much of a bitch to mic as I would ever want to deal with He likes his cymbols way closer to the toms than most.
