Hi guys,
when I add audio effects, I normally go to Edit/audio effects, and choose the plug-in. Tonight, I tried right-clicking on fx in normal and console view (Sonar), chose the effect, and I got an "out of memory" pop up box. What the heck does that mean? The first one with the correct answer gets a free 4cd Davemania thingee.
Oh wait, I think I am spamming someone elses product, I will just give the correct respondant a hug.

BTW, I am just getting into the art of plug-ins. Which is the most efficient way of applying the plug-ins? I have always found this a bit confusing. Thanx, Dave

Ugh, the dread "out of memory" message...

Sorry, David, I don't know, I remember seeing it pop up a lot in these threads but I don't recall what the issue is. Maybe someone else here who is less mnemonically challenged than I can cast some light?

Have you ever checked out the Sonar usenet newsgroup? Lots of activity, maybe you'll have better luck there. The new server is called news.cakewalk.com. (I think google searches these newsgroups now too if that makes life easier.)

I hope this doesn't turn out to be a huge hairy monster gorilla of a problem... :D

I guess I will just apply the effects the way I have always done it, at least it works. No King-kong size free 4 cd davemania set for you, sorry;)

Be patient, my son, I was actually jamming to some cool tunes today, having a blast, still am.

Mothra.

P.S. Is Popeye considered a superhero? I have always pondered this question.

I think so.

P.S. I am going home sick now, this flu that has been sweeping through my family the last few days have finally taken root in me. If I start hallucinating about Famous Monsters of Filmland and classic cartoon characters, I'll know who to blame...

Here are my reasons for not considering Popeye a superhero:

1. No secret identity. No cape either, which is not a necessity, but would further his legitimacy.
2. The "Popeye" theme music is not superhero caliber.
3. Popeye's voice does not strike fear into the hearts of his nemeses - Bluto and Brutus (who I've never seen in the same room at the same time. Hmmmm...)
4. Wimpy is too fat and stupid to be a legitimate sidekick.
5. My gut feeling is that the amount of steroids contained in his spinach would cause Popeye to fail any superhero drug test.:D

Now, on to your problem (because your CD set would really complement my collection):
I'm thinking your system cannot handle real time effects. By selecting from the edit menu, I think you're applying them to the wave forms, thus "printing" the effect. This is less demanding on the cpu.

Give us the lowdown on your system.

Memory

I'd still be interested in an answer to the memory question if anyone knows. Thanks.

ChuckU, I have a Celery 566, 256 ram, 15 gig hard drive (5400 rpm, am getting a second 7200rpm for audio next week).

Actually, what you are saying is that the way I am doing it is the best for the CPU?? Thats what I wanted to hear.

The 4 cd set " Davemania" is a different Dave then me. He gives out free 4cd sets to anyone who asks. Look for "a reel person", can often be found in the dragon cave

DavidK,

Yeah, if you apply the effect to the track through the effects patching way, the effect of the effect (?) is calculated in realtime as the audio is streaming by. Hard on the CPU but good for flexibility 'cause you can fiddle with its parameters until the cows come home.

Applying the effect "offline" by selecting the audio and right-clicking in the waveform and choosing Audio effects processes the track right there; it "prints" the effect, performing the calculations to the data and replacing the original data with the result. Much easier on the poor CPU, but if you're not happy three days from now with the amount of regeneration on the flanger you used, you're stuck, bub.

Well, not necessaritly. Hard disk space is cheap. You can always archive each audio track in its raw form, make a copy to another track to play with, and then when you rethink a setting two weeks later, you can return to the raw track and try other things.

Also note that each time you apply an effect "offline," you can always undo it after the fact, before you close down your session. (I forget how many levels there are of undo, a few at least if I remember -- that is, if you perform three commands, you can undo-undo-undo and return to the state before you issued those three commands.)

OK, doctor says get back to bed, so I'm getting....

Thanks AlChuck, sorry you are sick.

That all means total sense now. I guess since I didnt have a fancypants CPU, this will be the way I will do it, and keep hitting the undo button if I am not happy.

Hi David,Unless you are running an incredibly large amount of tracks and plug ins and input monitoring, etc. you should be able to patch effects in realtime with that Celeron. The only time I ever got that dialog was when I accidently tried to patch a waves effect that I wasn't authorized to use.I own rennaissance collection but all of their effects show up in the pop up window.Your problem can be solved,it could be as simple as an optimization tweak,i.e. limiting vcache min max or excluding upper memory emm386.The time you take to e-mail cakewalk or someone like DsSultan to get a fix will pay you back tenfold because of the time consuming nature of destructive editing while trying to get the right sound. Good Luck,Keith
