Hi Folks,
Could someone advise me if these specs are decent enough for home recording?? Im looking to buy an apple mac g5..

specs...

Dual G5 2.3 GHz
8GB SDRAM
250GB hard drive
OSX 10.5.8 leopard

any help is appreciated :)

I probably wouldn't. The PowerPC-based Macs are completely unsupported by Apple at this point, and haven't been for a couple of years.

I agree; it's a dead-end.

Unless you're getting a ridiculous deal, I'd look at getting the lowest spec Mac Pro at the very least.

This is coming from a G5 Quad Owner.... I'm happy with my system as is, but it's already paid for itself a couple of times over.

Likewise. Amazingly, if you get right down to it, the Mac Pro was slower than the Quad G5 at doing floating point ops (which is 99% of what audio processing uses) until the eight core that came out about a year ago. So if you really want maximum raw horsepower, a quad G5 is by far the best value for the dollar.

It's also out of warranty, brings with it a risk of liquid coolant leaks that are expensive to repair, and won't even run the shipping version of Logic, nor the current version of Mac OS X, nor the current versions of the iLife suite, nor any number of other things you would probably want.

hi folks,
thanks for all the comments

i left some questions on quite a few forums though forgot to check back here as i was only new! wish i had read this as i now have bought the mac.

:(

on the up side it has come loaded with alot of programmes including logic, final cut pro, photoshop etc

i will probably just be running cubase sx or protools 9 on it for a while to get used to computer recording, then ill think about upgrading in a year or so

im currently using a boss br1600 which is great though not for micro editing etc. really want to get into computer recording however im restricted by funds atm...
