Most Interface driver like the apogee have drivers that communicate with the host sound driver. Making sure those drivers are communicating first is the first step. My interface application Maestro where I can select I/O allows me to select Mic/Inst and Stereo or Mono signal selecting the correct recording features are crucial here as you will see in the Pro Tools HD software. Once all is set go back to host sound driver and do sound test make sure I/O are set correctly (as in my mac book bro I set Apogee USB Mic to Internal, and Output to USB Stereo out. Then open Pro tools HD, open hardware setup select the interface if your interface is not there do not panic select Host input & Host Output for your computer. Go to you I/O bus setting and create a path stereo or mono based on your interface driver setting in your interface software application. Create a Input path Mono/Stereo and Select a Stereo path label them save and close. Restart your session and WHOLAA!! You now have ANY interface working with Pro Tools HD|10.
