Maybe because it's $1200 for two inputs? Apogee is some expensive shit.

Point well taken...Apogee is very expensive. But as Apogee goes, if the Mini-Me unit sounds anything at all like the PSX-100, which is I believe still around $3000 for two channels (albeit with digital recording options and interfaces that the Mini-Me lacks, as well as being both A/D and D/A), maybe it could be worth the money to some people. Just a thought.

I'll agree it ain't cheap when looking at it all together.

But consider that it's a high-quality a/d converter (at least that's my guess, and I'm basing it simply on the apogee name, so I could be assuming too much) . . .

A compressor/limiter . . .

Two mic pres . . .

And a USB interface . . .

It kinda' seems more like a budget item. Divide the $1,200 by 4 and that's $300 a pop for each piece. I'd pay $300 for a good a/d converter and would consider it a steal. I'd also consider forking out another $300 for a good compressor/limiter if I thought it was worth it. And I have forked out $300 for a USB audio card (an audiosport Quattro, which I have since sold), and more than that on mic pres.

I might even even call this thing borderline "bottom feeder." :D

Yes Chess, except that you really can't break it down that way. It is sooo much cheaper to manufacture all these processes into one unt, rather than individule units. One power supply, one chassis, one PCB, etc. right down to one set of packaging. Then there's the labor. So parsing it out like that doesn't work.

it certainly looks neat...

I'd have to hear it to believe it though.

Off hand the piece of it that i doubt the most would be the compressor...just do.

I want a distressor! heh.

I'm friends with Gary Brenner, he's the head of apogee's tech support. I can guarantee you'll get good tech support... It's just that you really have to lay out some dough to need it...

I guess my main concern, aside from the compressor is, well, everying. :)

We know that Apogee knows a/d. But do they know USB? Do they know mic pres? Can they possibly fit all that in to one box that's that small and running on USB power and still have it sound world-class?

I'm really interested in hearing the reviews on this one. I doubt it will take very long, and there will probably be many.

To a lot of people it may seem expensive, but to me, it's a steal if it sounds world-class like some seem to believe it will.

Well, I just asked Gary what he thought about the mini me, and here's what he says.

Yes...the MiniMe's mic pre's are top notch as well as the converters...the soft limit compression is truly a natural level boosting technique and most live show tapers are finding out that this is the choice converter to go with!
The price is high in some aspects yes but you have to look at all the features included....
AES, SPDIF, Soft Limit, Soft Limit Compression, USB output with Sample Rate conversion, Line inputs or Mic Pre inputs.
The USB output will only be at 48Khz but if you set the unit to 24/96 the recording through USB will sound perfect still due to the SRC involved...if you are using the unit in 24/48 mode there will be no SRC involved...
The sound is colored but in an amazing way so putting a guitar with an fx processor into it with SLC at 1:3 sounds amazing! Also recording vocals via a condensor mic(such as the AKG series mics) are truly warm and brilliant...
What more can I say! It's a hot unit!
Production runs are being finished and will be shipping end of next week beginning of September

Hey, thanks for the spam, Subractor. :D :D LOL. Just kidding, everyone. What do you say we turn this in to another flame fest? ! :D

Sorry for my little rant, there.

Anyway, could you ask him about something for me?

My concern is that you probably couldn't use it along with a standard soundcard simultaneously unless it has a word clock I/O for syncing your sound card and the mini-me to the same clock. Is my suspicion correct? I was really hoping I could use it along with my existing sound card -- maybe record my critical tracks (drum overheads or acc guitar) with the minime and everything else with the remaining ones, simultaneously. Can this be swung?

My bad. I just realized it has spdif i/o. Thanks. I'm a dumbass.

Hey, no problem! Thanks for the opportunity to post, dumbass!

read what? ;)

nono, it's the like Dawson's Creek or Gilmore Girls on the BBS - uh oh...maybe I have revealed too much about myself.

I am thinking about getting a mini-me because I really only need two ins&outs, and it is cheaper than a a nice stereo pre+compressor+a/d/d/a+computer interface, but the only analog out from it is 1/8" headphone. Would there be a problem with monitoring the headphone signal with monitors? I have the Alesis M1-actives [and please don't tell me they suck. I don't want to know]

I think those sound great if you are listening to hip-hop. but your mixes will sound less bassy on other systems.
