You might look around for the 3124 like what littledog has. I got to do some sessions with these and would give similar comments as him and Shailat did.

The 3124 has an advantage that is cool. If for say you might want to combine 2 to 4 mic's together on a guitar cabinet going to one track, the mixing function of the 3124 will get you there without having to sum to another mixer first.

actually, the 3124 that I have is not the one with the mixer, that's the 3124+. But I have another pre that mixes down to stereo (the ATI 8MX2 - eight channels into 2).

but at $2600 new, some decent metering, and only one rack space it seemed a better deal than the 4 channels in a lunchbox style.

as far as using it on piano, I don't ALWAYS use it on piano, but I use it a lot on loud or percussive piano performances because it handles hot transients very well. On more subtle or some classical playing I might instead go to a super-clean variety pre instead. (In my case, the DACS MicAmp).
