yeah...

I've been wanting a really good 2-channel compressor for the golden channel. waited for a good while, and was going to wait longer, but somebody put 10 compellors buy it now on ebay for $375 each, and I snagged one without hesitation. There might be some left. Anywayz, got mine today, installed it in the rack, and ran a dry mix through it.

this thing is freaking transparent. its almost dissapointing. I didn't hear any real "change". thats with like 8-12 db of GR. ! but I had a hard time bringing lower volume stuff up to a louder volume in the mix.

what do you all think of the stereo enhancement option? normally I think stuff like that is total cheeze. probably hurting more than helping, although deceptive at first. Haven't played with this one long enough to know if it is the real deal or not but I am skeptical.

any favorite settings?

The Compellor is a very transparent compressor and was intended to be (I have one too). If you wanted a compressor with a more noticeable effect, it isn't it. A Distressor or FMR RNLA may be more like what you are looking for. I haven't yet heard the RNLA (just read about it) but I'm intrigued.

I don't use the stereo enhance and I also don't use the limiter. I usually use it in the leveling & compression mode, the far right button in that center grouping of four buttons.

The Compellor is not a typical compressor at all, it is designed to level program material in an invisible manner. It is amazing how well it does that.

I had my Compellor modified by Jim Williams of Audio Upgrades. Believe it or not, it makes the Compellor even cleaner, faster, and more invisible! I think the tone is also a little bit sweeter with Jim's mod.

true.

do you all know the difference between the levelling and compression? it sounds more "open" on the compression side but it also seems to have less effect. what was interesting to me was that the unit got the waveform to have more amplitude and also flatter (limited) but RMS was unchanged. er? I guess the attack is slow.
