I'm about to mod my Apex 460 and looking at the schematics... I just noticed that C6 is 25V/100uF on the diagram. I bought a 16V/100uF Black Gate... How much voltage actually goes through there? Will a 16V cap do?

Please help ASAP

Yes, the 16v should be fine.

Best, M

C6 is merely a cathode bypass cap. In most tube circuits the cathode bias voltage should be under 2v, so almost any voltage rating above 6v is more than enough, depending on the cathode resistor value.

Modded 460....

For those of you interested in trying out some different kinds of mods on the 460/1200/CV12/etc., that would like comparisons to the classic standard mics, I did a big shootout with a MJ modded 460 against:

Klaus Heyne modded U47
Stock M49
Sputnik
U87
M71S

and a bunch of other mics. There's some pics, audio clips of course, and a write up on the mics themselves. If you want to listen, you can check it out over here :

Last time I double posted a shootout here as well, but it was a hassle, and this time I'm just doing it ONCE. :D

Cheers,

There's 2 ways of dealing with it. You can put a small capacitor (preferably a polystyrene, 2pF to 100pF from the anode to grid, or you can replace the capsule to a K47 style as Michael suggests. Relieves all the sibilance problems and sounds very silky and fat.

I happen to have access to a good supply of very good sounding K47 style capsules That I will sell for $150 each. $200 installed. They are just like Peluso's, but without the sales BS. So far I have installed 8 of them in my own mics and others and feel the sound is phenomenal! Supply is limited in quantity, but the sound improvement is out of this world.

PM me for more info.
Cool. PM sent.

What I mean is that it's reassuring for those of us into mic modding. :)
