for $200. How bad can it be? I picked one up the other day. My keyboard player and I did a blind test against my C-1 and a C-3000. We did 2 takes with each using a Mackie VLZ and an ART Tube Pac. He sang a line of Amazing Grace in his mellow, tenor voice.
They all sounded very similar to us and in the end the winner by a gnat's hair was the C3000 thru the Mackie. But I gotta tell you, to our ears, the differences were negligible and I'm not so sure that if we listened again, we might pick a different combination.

ANybody that knows what they're doing use one of these Apex tube mics? BTW, just for the heck of it, I replaced the tube with a EH 12ax7 before the test.

Is the Apex 450 the same as the Nady TCM 1150? They do look the same, with that very long C12 type body.

You did let the tube warm up for at least half an hour before the test didn't you?

Yeah, it was good and hot before we started. Admittedly, I don't know what I'm listening for. It sounded OK to me.
timbo- I got it at a local music store where I have some connections, and I'll have to check the exact price whan I get home.

BTW- is it common to change the polar pattern on these mics with the power supply? It gives me 8 choices.

I picked one of these things up on a lark used ($165 CDN). Its got the yellow sizzle, but it's ok. Kind of a cheap build on it. I kind of dig the long body look - a prime candidate for the Jizzguard 2001 :D

What's the yellow sizzle? And what do you mean by a cheap build?
