i'm thinking about upgrading my amd k6-3 450mhz to an amd athlon 1.2ghz with 256m of that super fast ram.

anyone already using 1.2ghz with cakewalk? how much did it improve your ability to apply real-time effects compared to your previous system? and what was your previous system?

AMD

Well, I HAVE a 1.2ghz AMD sitting in my room in the box, but I dont have everything else yet. My motherboards are due tomorrow, but it'll be another week or 3 before I get everything else.
If you go with a faster AMD, also upgrade your motherboard to one that supports the 266mhz bus speed. Or at least the 200mhz bus speed. The asus a7m266 supports both... twice as fast as ANY PIII system bus. I dont suggest using anything with the AMD EXCEPT for the AMD 760 chipset, NOT the 750. Its a tad pricey at $170, but if you want performance, you might as well. It supports ata100 also.
If you havent upgraded yet by the end of april, look me up and I'll let you know how well its working out for me...

AMD DDR

Oh, and that "super fast "ram you speak of is probably DDR. A typical motherboard will not support it, its a different size. The board I spoke of does. Crucial.com has DDR cheapest, you can get 512mb (which is pretty fat) for $200. The Asus board will handle 2 GIGS of ram. Thats more storage than the hard drive itself on my old Pentium 1 machine. Twice as much, as a matter of fact. Can we say fat?

hmmmmmm

I think I'll shop around for an AMD 1.2 myself

looks interesting !!!

well i have an Athlon 600mhz which works great for me so i could imagine dbl the speed but i think if ur gonna upgrade u should upgrade to a PIV w/ the whopping 400mhz bus speed, if its too expensive i think the athlon is better cuz i have to comps a 600 athlon and 933pIII and don't see much of a difference....the bus speed prolly makes up for the less powerful cpu

Stick with AMD

Even Microsoft regrets and is dropping the Rambus thing for now, and alot of P4 motherboards are going DDR now instead of Rambus, because the performance is nearly identicle. Go with the AMD with DDR, thats still my suggestion. In all the pro reviews I've read, the AMD athlon 1.2ghz p[erforms in the same ballpark as the 1.5 P4, and a tad better than the 1ghz P3. Make sure you use the right chipset, though.
Microsoft just announced that they are gonna have 1.7ghz Pentiums and 1ghz system busses by the end of the year. A little optimistic, for sure.... I kinda doubt it... but if so, I know that when this one wears out, my next one will be more than I ever need.... imagine, dual 1.7ghz processors and 2 gigs of ram... fat....

Oh yeah, my bad... huge difference huh? They are one in the same, in most peoples book...

this 1.2ghz thing is looking up!

i think i'll start to upgrade my box next month (may), so i can do all the research on motherboard, ram, wattage, fans, and all that junk. it took me a while to upgrade to 450, so stepping up to 1.2ghz so quickly is hard to do. although, i'm a software architect by day, and a comp. sci. professor at night, i stay behind the tech curve when it comes to hardware.
