Ok, I've been hanging out here for damn near 9 months now. I have barely recorded any tracks that I put any effort into and keep finding myself reading over and over about the billions of cheap chinese mics that run through all of our heads on a daily basis. Anyone else in my boat? I keep telling myself that when I get that next piece of gear, I'm gonna lay down some tracks. 9 months! I could have already either recorded a decent home brewed cd or conceived a child in that time. I have learned alot of things here but what good is a bunch of knowledge about recording if I'm not recording music? I plan to record a home brewed cd by the end of the summer but in the mean time, I need to be recording........anything.

If anyone is in the same boat, it's time to start laying down some tracks. No excuses! I do have some current set backs but to hell with it. If anyone here wants to make use of the recording knowledge that you have acquired to this point, then lets do it. I'm looking to collab with anyone and everyone that has any interest in recording music and putting all the reading about chinese mics aside.

I play guitar, sing, play bass, make some crazy synth sounds in reason, and play with midi drums in bfd and reason. I love indie rock and blues but will play any style, any instrument. I have some quick and dirty tracks on soundclick that I did when I first started with all this recording stuff:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/1/travisthompson_music.htm

I think my recording skills have improved alot since throwing that stuff up on soundclick many months ago.

My current set backs are that my 1010lt sound card and my only condensor mic are out for repair. I should have them back within a month. In the mean time I can work in 16 bit and use my 2 sm58 mics. I'll manage until my stuff gets back to me.

So who's in?

It's really just that it's cumbersome for one person to be having to do the work of an entire band, so people like us eventually end up not doing any of it because we know how big of an ordeal it is.

I'm only 1 state north of ya. Maybe we'll do something even to the point of playing live. All my songs are only 20 seconds long, so I hope that's not a problem. Just kidding. All I've got is a collection of 20 second long bass guitar oriented original tunes with some guitar & some synth. I can do lyrics and vocals too.

In your Alaska song, after the "fat girl" line, you should make cowbell kick in :D

Honestly, I really like doing it all. It's no replacement for playing with others but it's fun and it opens my ears to what goes on with the other instruments in a band. I can really appreciate a good drummer, singer, and bass player after attempting all those duties myself though. Nothing sounds worse than midi drums, loose bass lines, and nervous vocals. But hell, it's fun anyway. I do play and record daily but I usually just toss everything at the end of a session and come here to read about things like using microphones as drum sticks. :D

So jdavidb, you in? Hell, we might end up making a 3 minute song out of this ordeal.

P.S. - if you're up for throwing down some cowbell........

I thought I should get my stuff uploaded. Here's all of it: http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=4613&alid=-1 I'm not intending to come across as saying I want anyone to work on those tunes if they don't want to. Just showing what I've done alone.

Sure I'll work on stuff with ya. You can see one in there called The Middle where I spent 3 or 4 hours one night doing vocals on Mccolling's song from here. So, I've done a little bit of this previously.

jdavidb, you got some bass playing skills.

ha, ha.......inside the vaccum cleanerrrrrr.........that rocks. I do silly shit like that too. we might work good together.

I remember the tune that you collab'd on with the vocals. I might actually be moving to Athens Georgia soon......have'nt decided yet.

I'm not sure where to start with all of this. Maybe one of us could throw down a rough track with rhythm and vocals to get going. Hopefully a drummer will stop by.........actually, I saw a drummer earlier looking to collab. I'll pm him.

If you want to do the rough track, by all means go ahead. I've been up all night so I'm about to crash. If you don't have one up by the time I get up, I'll post one.

Today, I've gotta go to the lake & do July 4th stuff, and I'll be there overnight. I'll be back Sunday evening then I can get back to the equipment and all this.

I know exactly what you mean. The mp3 forum is the best part of HR IMO, because it's music not just blah-blah-blah-blah...

BTW your playing sounded excellent in the Rumble, so hell, just put up some more music.

I've all but given up reading the other forums here... wastes too much time with all the opinion posturing and blah-blah-blah-blah-blah...
If I had read one more thread where somebody said, "I've got $X to spend and I want all of you to writhe at my feet in gear lust trying to convince me - in endless repetition - what I should buy", my head would have exploded.

Travis, I'm in if there is anything I can contribute. I'm on vacation for another week or so, but will do whatever when I get home. I have guitar, bass, and very poor vocal skills. Actually, all poor skills, but if you hear me sing, you'll think my guitar is better. Do you have anything in particular in mind? Work on an older peice you have, start a new one.....etc...I can write meaningless lyrics very fast, and put together simple Sabbath like riffs quite often. Does any of this help?

Tim, sounds like you need to visit the rep point thread. Some weasle will ding you with neg rep if you post there, but it's mainly just a bs session constantly happening. So far offbase, you can't keep up, but you will laugh most of the time.

jdavidb, we'll be here when you get back.

timothy lawler, thanks for the rumble comments. you in on this too? i know you can do some fine guitar playing.

dogman, most of my skills are pretty poor too but to hell with it. no excuses! i'm thinking that we should start with new stuff. we could work on multiple tunes to accommodate our various styles. i'm pretty flexible. i'm gonna go play a bit and see if i can get something together to post. any way that you would like to contribute would be fine with me.

Am I the only one who listened to porno blues repetitively? :D

Goodstuff man. Yea I hear ya about not getting around to finishing songs, I'm the same way.

I must be on the Perv review, because I did too!!! :D :D :D

Heres what I came up with so far. I have the rhythm and melody together but have'nt recorded the rough track yet. Any suggestions are welcome.

---------------Chinese Brain Pirates--------------

-Intro-

Been up all night
thinking about all the cheap chinese mics
Should I get a B1 or a V67G
I don't know
Maybe you could help me see the light

-Verse 1-

Please tell me Harvey
which one is the best
And do you agree with
what Chessrock says
Oh I did'nt come here
to start a fight
I'm just trying to pick thru
all the cheap chinese mics
I don't have much money
What do you suggest
This thread's getting too heavy
I'll just take a guess

-Chorus 1-

Yea they've conquered Russia
and now they're after me
Taking over my mind
like some damned disease

-Verse 2-

On and on
All night long
Dancing through my head
when I'm lying in bed
All through the week
No I can't sleep
They come creeping in
I just can't win
It's a chinese invasion
of the home rec nation

-Chorus 2-

Yea they've conquered Russia
and now they're after me
Dancing through my head
I can't go no relief

For this one, I'm gonna need a drummer, bass player, backup vox, main vox if mine suck too bad, and someone that wants to play producer. I'll wait for any suggestions and record the rough track some time tonight.

......glad you dirty birds enjoyed the porno blues clip.

Since I'm stretching out of my normal element when I record improvisations over tunes, what I'd do is listen, tinker with it a little, and if I get an idea I'd jump in. Maybe because of the baggage my classical background gives me, my creative process is too slow and too cautious. :o I'm working to get over that but that's where I am at the moment, in all honesty. But given that, I'm open to anything just for the fun of it.

yea, it's hard to break out of a style if you have been doing it for a long time. do you play any electric guitar? of course, this is all in fun and the point is to just play and record some complete tunes without all the technical mumbo jumbo taking over. i'd still like to come out of this with some decent quality tunes though. by decent, I mean at least better than anything that is posted on my soundclick page.

ok, sorry for not posting the rough track tonight, i am very drunk at the moment and I think it would be best to take care of it in the morning. merry christamas.

I wound up spending the night at home, but I didn't do anything either. Once today at the lake is over, I can get busy.

ok, heres the rough track. just a guide for the other tracks. starts out at 80 bpm and changes to 110 bpm after the intro. any suggestions are welcome. and yea, it's pretty cheesy. not really my style but I figured it would make for a easy collab.

sorry i took so long to get it up. i had some complications.
