I'm about to break down and order NT. I have 2000, and 98, in a dual boot. The idea is to use 2000 for audio. But with the apps I have, and the Delta 1010 or my GL496 either I can't utilise my dual processors, or I can't use all of my inputs or use 24bits. Very frustrating indeed. This Bp6 and dual celeron 533 setup is obsolete enough already, but by the time things are worked out, this machine will be worth about $8. Being able to use only one Celeron 533 sucks!. I can get NT4 online for about $55 bucks. Is it good for audio? I've heard the midi timing isn't good but I don't do midi.

The setup would then be. dual celeron 533's, NT4, delta 1010, Vegas Audio.

...or I could buy Sonar. I've been meaning to call cakewalk to ask about a competitive upgrade. They'll probably give me $10 off. But software is not what I need to spend my money on. I need microphone. all your microphone belong to me :D

...or I could upgrade my machine. What I would do is get an Abit vp6, stick a single 1GHz PIII in it, and use 98. Later I could add a second processor when all the incompatibilities are resolved, go with 2000, and have a kick ass rig! this would run me over $300 though for now.

Really I should have gotten NT back when I just had the GL 496.

What would you do? and Slack don't tell me to get N-track!

btw... anybody want to buy a Gadget Labs 496? I was think I'd keep it, but I need cash, I'll be out of a job next week! :(

I've been using NT for audio and I don't use MIDI so I have no experience with the claimed MIDI problems. I've only used N-Track though...

Iread this again and realised that I have no idea what you mean. Why can you not use your dual procs in 2000? Do you mean that your apps and the Delta don't run under 2000?

98, NT and 2000 work in tri-boot as well, if you have enough disc space for all three.

exactly

With the Gadgetlabs, I couldn't even load the drivers without changing the mutiprocessor kernal to the standard cpu one. Then they go belly up before the WDM drivers come out.
so then I got the Delta 1010 bundled with Vegas. I was very nieve thinking this would solve the problem. I'm still very confused about why the Vegas/ Delta/ 2000 combo dosen't work. According to sources both from M-audio and Sonic Foundry it is a problem with Vegas. Micrsoft released programming notes with a workaround for the 2000 k-mixer or whatever it is, which have not been implememted into Vegas. Given that we are talking about Sonic Foundry here, there probably won't be an update. It will just come with Vegas 3 nezt year, which they'll make us pay for. What I don't get is that the RME cards do work with Vegas in 2000. So this is what I think might be going on. The RME drivers are apparently MME drivers, I didn't think MME worked with 2000, but somehow? M-audio uses the WDM spec, which Vegas simply dosen't recognise? I'm still scratching my head....
I'm sick of the whole thing.

James-

If you decide on NT, send me an email before you buy it. I can save you money legitimately.

A few thing to keep in mind if you're going for a tri-boot, although I think you know all of this already.

You must have a C: partition formatted in FAT as that is the only file format that all three OSes can boot from.

You must install 98 first, then NT and 2000 last. Don't even try installing NT after 2000. You'll just end up with more problems than you can shake a stick at.

You may want ot get the plu-in "NTFS for Win98" so you can access your Audio partition/disc from 98.

I think much of your problems come from the BP6/Win2000 incompatibility. Sure, there are updated BIOSes and wierd mods but I don't think they solve everything. I mean, these "updates" come from guys who go wild on their mobos with a soldering iron and break open their hard discs...

I think NT is the way to go for you. If you can get game etc. to work under 2000, great - but there are enough compatibility problems with DAW so you don't really need to add a BP6 into the calculations to make your hair turn white.

The more I think of it, NT is the way to go for you.

Good luck

No, his problems are not due to the BP6. Gadgetlabs was working on Win2000 multi-processor support. And M-Audio has posted known limitations. I'm sure they will eventually come out with a better driver.

James, why not consider selling the Gadgetlabs card? There comes a point when you have to make the important decisions. The $300 you could get for the Wave could buy you two Celeron 700's and you'd have cash left over to boot. Your system is far from obsolete.

Slackmaster 2000

Thanks for the responses guys.

Slack, yeah I will be selling the GL, doubt I'll get $300 though. That's what I paid for it! THe thing that does suck about the BP6 is that the 533's ARE the fastest processors I can slap in there. UNless there is a way to put a FCPGA processor into a PPGA board. Is there a way? From my understanding it wont work. And I've never seen a PPGA celeron over 533.

there is overclocking... seems almost stupid with dual processors though. I've had these 533's running at 566 before! wooo hooo! watch out! :D

At some point I do want to upgrade the computer, put the Bp6/533's into a game/internet box using the dual boot 98/2000, and have a setup just for audio. BUt by then the rules of the game will have changed. Microsoft ___ will have come out, well have PIV 2GHZ processors, The audio software will do your laundry, etc. etc. etc,

I think I'll give NT a try.

You can run dual PIII on the BP6. It's just a matter of how handy you are with a soldering iron... check out the various upgrade paths at bp6.com. They have it all.

that sound's intresting ola. It seems dodgy with dual PIII's from what I could read. It seems most of those guys have a single PIII installed. except for like one guy with Dual PIII 800...

that certainly was an intresting read... I'd be afraid to go that route though.. next thing you know I'd be modding my harddrives with plexiglass!

I will flash my BIOS though and try some overclocking tricks just for kicks. The 533's don't like to overclock at all. BUt it's fun to mess with anyways.

-ok that bob gif freaks me out! that' things tasty! yum!
