Is this worth my time, or is Waves something I shouldn't get into for a little while. Seems like a pretty awesome program to have instead of a gigantic rack! Anyone have experience with it and care to share their thoughts?

I dont think its worth the time. . . or money. Havn't used any of the plugins for that reason, but I dont think they are worth it untill you are extremely good with these things so that you actually notice the differences between them and other plugins, or are making the money to justify spending that kind of cash on plug ins.

There's better value out there..for sure

work out what you need and do a little research, Waves is damned pricey and pretty pointless if you dont know what you are doing with them

Id learn what you can do with the plugs you get with your DAW and fill in the gaps from there........

Well the reason I ask is we get programs for free at work. Basically so we take them home, use them, then go crazy at work telling people about it. Pretty smart on their side. So price is not a concern, just wondering if it's worth my time to bring it home!

I don't have any experience with Waves, but I like the idea of an external DSP unit carrying the load for resource intensive plugs, like the UAD stuff. Waves has a great reputation, probably for a good reason, but the plugs run natively and eats up CPU time.

Also, Waves is often the subject of piracy and hackers. This site bans anyone who advocates piracy or is looking for help on their cracked wares. So, please don't cross the line. I'm sure Waves has some kind of authentication system like a dongle, so you can't legally pass around free copies at work, unless they are buying licenses. Pretty expensive.

Yeah it's the Waves company that gives it to us. Kind of a bummer though because of licensing agreements it's only PC (but we have a couple guys that got it to work for Mac).

I see I'm really late on this thread but here goes for what it's worth. I date back to Waves Platinum Bundle V5 which only works up to Windows XP. (spent over 2k at the time for that software). It integrates very well into Cubase SL2.0 and Wavelab 5 which I still use. While I did invest heavily into my DAW back in '03 - '04, only added a few hardware upgrades since then but still use the same software because it works. I have been thinking of upgrading though which is how I stumbled on this thread.

Yes it was pricey but VERY convenient to have all these capabilities and features in one place. Waves will let you use any of their bundles free for 30 days but they do require iLok to authorize them after that which is convenient if you want to take them from PC to PC. I don't but many do.

You've got to think hard as to which one's you'll REALLY use though. There are some metering capabilities I like, EQ's, COMP's and limiters that are very good but most of them I only need once in a while. Is it worth the price? Most would probably say no but like I said, I do like to have so many tools at hand.

Waves is have a pretty good deal on the individual plugins right now. They're less expensive than what they cost in the bundles. So I recently put a bundle together for myself of the stuff I'm actually going to use.
