No... a "good value" would be an inexpensive tool you will find yourself using for many years and not outgrowing [like the FMR "RNC"]... these are "cheap", not "inexpensive".
Most likely you'll outgrow these units in a year or two and end up eBaying them or something similar. Inexpensive would mean not a lot of money to get into, and will last you a career.... cheap would mean something that won't last you a career.
arpodthegreat: What are you looking to compress? Anything in particular? Or are you looking for a general purpose comp?
I'm not as enthusiastic as the others on the RNC, but it is a decent "all-around" inexpensive comp. It's great across the mix bus, decent on vox and drum bus and guitars.
If you want something with distinctive character, the RNC isn't it, IMHO.
(Sorry I can't comment on the HHB or Fostex; just wanted to warn against treating the RNC as the be-all-and-end-all of inexpensive compressors.)
Looking for transparency & clarity less the unwanted audio artifacts usually apparent in dynamic processors priced in the $200 or less price range?
Trust me, the RNC is the ANSWER!!
Not much on looks nor is it rackmountable (unless you purchase the faceplate),however is provides excellent performance (I luv it on bass) & flawless operation !
Whenever I use the percussive,thumb-slap tek-neek where I perform more energetically thus producing excessive gain, peaks and harmonics & such, I'm in need of aggressive control of the bass's dynamics where I indeed run the bass thru the RNC to the recorder. In other instances, I''ll insert the unit direct into channel while using the Aphex Bass Exciter direct into board (which is both a DI and a great bass tool for a clearly defined bass perf).
I try my d@mnest not to rely on using the RNC on every bass track I record so as not to become to dependent upon it. I try to pay heed to a well-c'ntr'ld perf 1st, but if get in one of those zones where I'm TRULY feeling the flow of the music (as well as getting my drink on ) and there's an apparent fluctuation in the dynamics, rather than do the track all over again, I'll fix it with the RNC!!!
