Anyone tried one of these? - Studio Projects C1

Alan Hyatt of PMI sent me the C1, the C3, and the T3 to listen to. They arrived late Friday, and I intend to listen to all 3 models this week. So far, all I can tell you is that they look very nice, they seem to be well built (although I haven't looked inside them yet), and they come packed in a nice flight case.

The C3 seems to be almost identical to the Nady SCM1000 as far as the features, specs, and switches available, so I'll be comparing it to the C3, and I'll be comparing the C1 to the Marshall big mics, and a Neumann TLM103.

I just spotted this interesting line of mics in my latest Full Compass catalog. If I have any complaints on it so far, it's the butt-ugly logo. :p They should have someone design a really nifty logo like Neumann, AT and other such brands. (Maybe I should apply...I've done logos for a few companies :D)

I just came across this on musicplayer:

I love the Radius 40. I'm an old Tony Larking Audio fan. I've been enthusiastically recommending the R40 and had many people make a purchase. All of them have been completely blown away.
My first project studio mic was a TLM 103. I've also been using a 414, but I wouldn't recommend it as the first general vox mic to buy.

Recently, I have discovered what I feel to the best large condenser under $1K. It is the Studio Projects C1. Price $209 from www.macmidimusic.com

It's one of the best large condensers I have ever heard in any price range. I recently posted a raving C1 review here. I can not recommend this mic highly enough!

The TLM103 plus the Radius 40 gives first-class sound.

The C1 plus the Radius 40 gives world-class sound.

if harvey gives the c1 a raving review, I'll be getting one ASAP.

On the demo, I preferred the sound of it to all the other mics.

I guess the NTK will just have to wait. At this price, I can get a c1 and a used 528 pre and be rolling.

I wasn't able to play the sample recordings from that review... kinda weird that they used WAV instead of MP3, too.

Thast weird, I've been looking at the Radius 40 for quite awhile. I wish there were more reviews from people I knew and trusted. Who was that reviewer?
Anyone know anything about that preamp?

Yo tubedude,

I have been wanting to ask this, but what preamp did you use on I dunno.

Listening to it on my monitors, it sounds VERY good. It was a bit covered up by the instruments, but I could still hear that nice sheen. I wonder if its the tlm103 or the pre. I would not be surprised that the pre has a lot to do with it though.

Focusrite red series with built in compressor. I would give your left nut to own it. ;)
I'd say it was a combo of the 2. You should have heard it through the Mackie monitors while it was still in 24 bit mode. I was going through diapers every 20 seconds.

I picked up a Studio Projects C1 several months ago and also got an AT 4047 at the same time. I recorded with both of them and compared them the best I could. They were actually very close in sound, but I felt the C1 had a little more definition and dB output. So since the AT 4047 was over twice the cost, I returned it. I am pretty happy with this mic.

I started a thread over a month ago, but there didn't seem to be any interest. I am also very interested in hearing Harvey's opinion and what might me the best uses for this mic- male vocals, female vocals, acoustic instruments... I don't have a large collections of mics to compare it to.:)

Just bought a C1 yesterday. First impression (after a VERY brief tryout last night) is that this is a great microphone!

I've narrowed my choices down to the V67, the NTK, and the C-1. I'll be watching this thread VERRRY carefully. Any comparisons between any of these three would be most welcime.
