I saw this while browsing the GS forums....if you aren't familiar with it, the idea is to put a 57 in a condom, then insert it into a half-full bucket of water and stick in a foot or so in front of a kick drum with the resonant head taken off. you would i suppose blend that with whatever micing technique you would normally use.

anyone tried this?

sound travels great distances under water.
did they give the advantage of doing this?
I know while when as a child we use to bring rocks into the pool and hit them together while under water and the click that was produced was something else!

That's got to be one of dumbest things i've read in a while.I'm no sound exepert but if it sounded that great everyone would be doing it.I can just imagine every band going into a studio and insisting their drummer plays under water.:laughings:

the only thing anyone said was "for a cool effect"

OK guess I'll have to try it some time for the cool effect.

yeah..id worry about about leakage into the condom. piece of duct tape around the end maybe?

You just have to put the microphone half way into the water!
and if the condom leaks a little what have you got to worry about other than to have a bunch of little 57s running around the house.:D:laughings::D

Eh, maybe not as a primary channel for a kick drum mix, but it might be cool if you had a couple of kick tracks to bus the "bucket" track into a compressor, reinsert it to the channel path and do some "NY compression". Might add a little bit of warm low end. FWIW, Ringo used to duct tape a pack of smokes to his snare head, and people thought that was silly. Just a thought...

:)

You could stick a microphone in a bucket of Jello...who cares. If it gives you the sound that you're looking for, then it's all good. Even if it doesn't give you the sound that your looking for, who cares...at least you tried. :D

im into nuts stuff like this :) however i cant do this at college :(

Interesting, but I'd be worried about getting lube all over the SM57...

I can't BELIEVE I just wrote that. :(

lol. We've all heard of crazier-sounding things, I'm sure. I'll give it a shot next time I'm recording drums, if i remember. Somebody who's got their own drumset should just do it real quick and post what it sounds like.

I'm sure it would sound like royal shit. But then some folks like those types of effects.

Why not just fill the inside of the kick drum with water?

Actually, I think it's kind of a cool idea. Thinkin outside the box. ;)

Besides, it doesn't really matter if it works or not when ya think about it. Just the act of trying it would get you thinkin even more outside the box and some of the coolest effects and recordings could come from it.

Sounds to me like a lot of potential gain could be had and really nothin to lose.

Well.....except maybe a mic. :o

:D
