i have a boss mt-2 distortion pedal that somehow fell out of my friend's truck a while ago while hauling a bunch of gear and got run over in the process

anyways...the damned thing still works, but all of the knobs and pots are broken and need replaced - i called boss/roland a couple days ago, and they want $58 for the parts

i only payed $30 for the pedal at a pawn shop, so i'm not really open to paying what boss wants for the parts, and was curious if anyone knew of any significantly cheaper source for replacements.

You could try e bay...boss are horrible when it comes to repairs, their minimum fee is about $60 like ya said. I dunno, you might be able to post an add in the 'for sale' thread...I'm sure people have broken pedals and most of the boss stuff uses the same knobs. I'll bear ya in mind should the worst happen any of mine.

Never personally opened one, but I've heard that Boss parts are somewhat proprietary. Other than that, try to find some mini-pots of the same values and see if they'll work.

Okay heres the most likely problem-electronics today are going to surface mount components-parts barely bigger than grains of salt or pepper. And they require specialized parts in the small spaces they fit into.
I had a bad volume pot in a Fender amp that I had to order a pot-with about 6 pins that connected to the circuit board. I figured if I tried to use a standard style pot it might short out something-so I didn't want to chance it~

By the time it's all said and done, you will have been better off to just buy another one off ebay or some used gear store...

yea, i've seen a couple of the modded models around here and there for about $60...i might just snag one of those

i was hoping there might be somewhere that would sell the pots/knobs together for $15-$20, in which case i'd be willing to change them out, but otherwise it looks like i'll be replacing it

I think this is true......Alesis for one is the same way, and one reason why I really dont like owning Boss/Roland gear. But some of their stuff sounds good, so I own it anyway.... darn it!

But I haven't yet run over one with a motor vehicle....

Proprietary stuff usually doesn't stay in business or on the market very long, it just isn't competitive to churn out proprietary gear, unless your stuff is really, really good and/or fills a very specialized niche. (Which is what guitar pedals are.) Atari computers would be a good example of proprietary gone bad.
