boom box recordings
I was looking to get a lap steel guitar, but I want one that will be worth having (stay in tune, good tone, etc.....).

If you are just wanting to try your hand at lap steel, you might consider the ones they sell at Musicians Friend. They sell one made by Artisan for $79.00, sometimes less on sale.

I've had one for about a year and a half. No, it's not the greatest in the world but you can find out if you like lap steel or not.

I replaced the cheap nut on mine. I was able to make one from aluminum. After that, the sound and sustain improved greatly. The strings didn't sit evenly with the old nut. I run mine thru a Zoom g2.1u pedal and it sounds great. Be sure you get a decent bar too, like a Stephens.

I have a Morrell lap steel that I think I got for about $120 (with a bar and case). It sounds decent and holds it's tuning well. I've heard the Artisan is a fair practice axe for the price.

I would suggest that almost everyone who has purchased a lap steel finds they only use it on rare occasions for very specific songs or for a particular recording effect. Accordingly, for most, it simply does not make economic sense to invest too much cash into an axe that is rarely used.
