I was trying to "mod" my 57, I saw that if you removed the perferated plastic disk from over the capsule it will reduce the extended mid range effect of the mic. So I tried it, poped off the screen with a screw driver and in the process I disconnected one of the copper wires from the capule and I was wondering if it just has to get connected to the body of the capsule or if it needs to be soldered inside some where. Check out the picture to see what I mean...

The text in the picture says something like "I think this is where the ends were connected before"

Ouch! If I'm looking at what I think I'm looking at, you've broken one of the two little super fine wires that come off the coil. I'm not sure how successful repairs are on that sort of thing. I tried with a cheap mic a long time ago and just made a huge mess of it. There is one of those tiny wires on either side. On a 58 I just messed with, they were protected by pieces of yellow tape. If you can get what's left of the end near the coil, you could possibly resolder a new piece of wire to it, then to that terminal.

Bear in mind, it's extremely fragile. You can also probably ruin it with too much heat. I'd look around for details on dynamic mic coil repair and see if you can get some good first hand suggestions before touching it. If there is enough wire coming off the coil to work with, you don't want to screw up and lose any more.

remember that the coil wire has coating on it that is solder resistant so you need to scrape the coating off to get the solder to stick ..... Good luck , you will need it ....

If there is enough wire coming off the coil to work with, you don't want to screw up and lose any more.

I think the entire length connecting the coil to the terminal has been ripped out!! Yikes!

I may have to just scrap this mic

Why would you Mod an SM57?

I know, I know it was stupid of me, but lately I've had a little beef with this mic. I've been getting way took much mid range, it always sounds like everything I put thru it is going thru a tin can.

Maybe it was a counterfiet in the first place...I have several real SM57s and they all sound pretty close to the same...not tinny at all.

This is a good point, because while I was taking apart my other 57 to see where the coil connects I noticed that one had a gold capsule and one had a silver....It wasn't a rip off brand seeing as it has the exact same body and parts and shure sm 57 logo, maybe it was just a shitty version, my other 2 sound much better thats why I tried with this one....

The only mod I have done to one of my 57's is to remove the transformer, seems to sound a little better on snare (can't describe but it just does) and lowers output a bit so you don't need to pad snare channel in mixer.

Sorry to say but your 57 is dead, I have tried to fix them in this condition, thanks to drummers, and never got one to work properly.
