Anyone have a great Bass DI?

I've been searchin' around on these forums and have seen a few good recommendations: Sansamp, Whirlwind, Avalon, and so on. I was wondering if anyone has come across anything stunning or over-the-top as far as bass DI's go. I'm looking for something that will really help the bass cut thru nice and crunchy and give it some character rather than just a sub-like presence.

Thanks

The Great River NV series preamps have the best sounding DI for bass I've ever used. Not cheap. $1150 for the single channel unit.

I run through a Hartke VXL bass pedal for a direct signal and really have no complaints. Allows you to "shape" your sound somewhat or leave it raw.

+1...

talkbass.com

You will find oodles of info on Bass DI's over at talkbass.

My own personal experience is that I've had good results from several. Currently I use an Ampeg SVTDI both live and in the studio. It is simply fantastic. The Studio setup runs the SVTDI through a SCA N72 preamp....simply great with the saturation the N72 gives the tone to tape when pushed.

I have also had great tones from lower end gear such as the Presonus Tubepre...it makes a very nice DI for bass as long as you judiciously use the drive pot.

For a DI/preamp combo, I love the Demeter VTBP 201....with the Jensen transformer....very nice piece of kit that can be found for very reasonable money used.

Another very clean (U5ish) DI that works exceptionally well for bass is the Simon Systems DB-1A direct box. It has quite a bit of headroom (18volt design) and is simply one of the most pristine direct boxes I have found. Compares excellently with the Avalon unit (tonewise - obviously the U5 has some additional functionality) for half the price.

Don't know anything that will give you STUNNING results. I've used the Sansamp and it's ok, you can get useable results from it.

I use a Countryman type 85 fet DI box and that gives me enough signal to process and mix with the mic signal (EV RE20) in the cab. From that I have had STUNNING results.

I like my Countryman Type85 a whole lot too.

I've always just used the M-audio DMP3 when Di-ing. It's worked fine for me, when not micing the bass cab.

Best i've ever used - Ridge Farm Gas Cooker.

Brilliant, and not just as a bass DI - wonderful for keys as well. You can drive the input to the tubes so can get some fairly gnarly tones if you want them.

Unfortunately they dont make'em anymore as far as I'm aware...

Or of course... the GT Brick... a Ditto with a preamp

Yeah I use the Daking pres...they seem to be really clean but beefy....but this is my second choice. It is really a great box as long as your bass isn't too dark to begin with.

Is the U5 as great as everyone makes it seem? I may have to save my coin and pick up one of those. Anyone have a good/judgable recording thru said box?

Thanks again,

I use the Avalon u5 and the vintech 273 mic pre di.Sounds awesome.my studio www.sterlingsoundstudios.com

Well you could try one of these.

I have played on one a few times and they sound pretty damn nice. I don't think I could cough for one my self, I can get about any sound I want running direct to board with my bass.
Compression is all I really need after the fact.

Yo Bzuzaldo! Here's are some clips done with Avalon AD2022- It's a solid state 2 channel mic pre, but the instrument input circuitry is identical to the U5. Click on #9 "Summertime", and #2 "Requiem"-Richie
