just wondering if anyone has achieved any success in this application with this particular mic...i have a project coming up soon that i'd like to get some good "thwack" out of the toms with, and find my current selection of audix d2/d4 or sm-57's to not quite have the sound i'm looking for

I use rode nt5's as overheads, they do well

The NT5's will likely be too hot for close micing toms. Try a mic with a minus 10db pad like the Oktava 012.

nt 5's on toms

I recently recorded tom overdubs (my DW's) with a pair of NT 5's in the "overhead" position, not near the heads. I used nylon blastiks in order to really "whack" the toms. The results? I'd have to say---surprisingly good!!
Good drums and heads tuned well, can't go wrong! Anyways, have had good luck overall with these little mics....take care and good luck.....
