Greetings MD8 hacks and users,

On Friday night, I recorded some things on the md8 using the mic/line input on channel 2. Everything worked as it should and I shut everything down as usual, same as the last couple of years. On Saturday morning, I played back what I did the night before and I thought I could do better. I flipped the PB switch and reset the preamp gain to its previous setting, I started to rehearse/warm up and there was no sound, at least other than some unusual noise not found on all the other inputs. I tested the cables and all the inputs, played with the switches and there is definitely a problem with channels 2 mic/line input. Turning the gain up and down makes no difference on the level of noise and that channel still plays back just fine. I copied a track to the 2nd channel and playback worked, but I cannot record direct to that channel. Any ideas? Im throwing around the idea of taking it in to a Yamaha tech, but Im not sure how much or how long I will be without a recorder. Should I get it repaired or just work around not having that mic/line input available?

Peace,
Dennis

Yo radiation of atoms:

I'm not quite sure what your problem might be, but, DID YOU MAKE SURE YOUR PREVIOUS RECORDING ON TRACK #2 WAS PUT INTO THE TOC?

I've lost tracks on my MD8 when I forgot to push the "Stop" "toc" button.

Maybe I'm off track or don't quite understand the problem?

If it isn't the TOC, then you probably have a problem with the unit. But, somehow, I don't think it's the unit.

If you shut off the MD8 without imputing the table of contents, you will lose data.

Hope this helps you radiation king.

Thanks Greenie Guy,

Yeah, the TOC is updated. Its not losing data, it just wont let me use the inputs on channel 2. I think it may have blown the mic./line gain circuit, the PB switch is working. I can playback through channel 2. Yamaha techs are curious to whats going on. Thanks.

Peace,
Dennis

Man, You gotta get Digi 001.....

Tell you what, I will buy you one for Christmas....:D

Thanks joe :) My B-day is closer tho...

Yamaha said exactly what I did wrong! I forgot to turn off the phantom power whilst having a unbalanced line plugged into the input...PoP! I damaged the mic/line preamp in less than a ms... Oh my, 3 weeks and 200 buck later was the offer to fix it...I was gonna get an RNC..Im really unhappy right now!

Peace,
Dennis

Honestly Dennis...

Why don't you work on getting something else.... Like Digi 001, or Something similar...

Digi 001 can be had for $799 new, and on ebay for half that... all you need is the decent computer to support it....

Think of the repair money, and all those expensive MD data disks, etc... In the long run, it will work out...

If your not good with DAW's and computers, I can help you... Im not really good either, but Digi is so damn easy, you don't need to know anything...

I hear what your saying Joe, its not like I don't regret spending $1100 bucks on the md8. Im more inclined to do a hybrid setup. I sit for 8 to 10 hours a day clicking a mouse an twisting the spaceball while typing with one hand, doing it when I get home would seem more like work. Im in the process of plotting an upgrade during a space expansion. My preference would be 24/96 HDD with a HUI or analog board. I could export from the HDD to an editing station and Master it in the Family room, which is like 22ft by 15ft. From there I have some great speakers to monitor on as well as the ability to pump the audio through the DVD optical in, through the surround system for A/B. I have these speaker for along time and have listened to more music on those than anything else. Effectively, what Im doing without my wife actually realizing it, is turning 700 sqft of the house into studio related space. I already have 2 PC 's networked, one in the studio to the one in the family room. Once though I get a new recorder setup Ill give the md8 to my daughter or something. The cost of upgrading the PC to run with the digi is a great idea and may be an interim until all my ducks are purchased.

Peace,
Dennis

Yo Nuclear Core:

Yamaha 2816 or the 4416 and you will have your hands full forever. I guess PC program will do the job too but, I just like to have a small screen to look at.

My md8 track 2 is blown also. Me and my friend were recording and his mic was on track 2 . He was drunk and getting too close to the mic. yelling and screamin . ka@boom! no more track 2.
sucks.. i record to my computer now. I use a soundblaster live ,but im looking into getting a delta 44 sound card. I use my md8 as a mixer . A very expensive 8 channel 4 band mixer. sorry,,, 7 channel.
