I'm getting ready to put some new pup's in my new 50th Anniversary American Deluxe Strat, and was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Lindy Fralin line of pickups..........the Vintage Hot and Blues Specials in perticular.

I've read all sorts of literature and listened to the MP3 clips on Acme's site http://www.acmeguitarworks.com/index.aspx , but I'm just trying to find some real world experiences.

Thanks,
Rick

I've played them in a couple of Grosh guitars and they sounded fantastic. I thought about purchasing some for a strat I'm putting together. They are the same quality as Rio Grande's and other nice replacement pickups. I'm not sure if I played the exact same models as you, but I really liked them.

I put a set of Lindy Fralin Blues Specials in my Tele.. I haven't looked back!

Wait... I thought Fralins were a secret.. Only used by the best of the best...

There's an interview with Lindy Fralin in the book, "Recording Guitar and Bass" by Huw Price; it gives details on how/why he winds coils the way he does and the magnets used. Might be of help if you're looking for more research. Aside from that the book is very helpful for recording too.

I have played fralins and I like them...but I also like fender pickups. Fender pickups are half the price of fralins.

I will say this, the most important aspect of achieving a great tone is what your left hand and right hand is doing with the guitar...and also the amp you are using. Most replacement pickups are good....Fender pickups offer the best bang for the buck IMO.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I went a head and downloaded all of the MP3 sound clips from AMCE's site. I then burned them onto a CD and printed out a list of the "tracks" so I could tell which pickup they were using and what postion the 5-way was in.......this will better alow me to "track" my thoughts on each pickup as well as how it sounded in each 5-way position.

Let me tell you that just listening to them on a cheap set of PC speakers does not do anything for these recordings.......I was having a very hard time telling any difference between most of the clips. Since I've downloaded them on to a CD, I've been listening to them in my Truck which has a very good "system" in it...WOW is all I can say! You can hear very distinct differences in all of the pickups......even the ones where they are just adding the Bass/Base plate to the bridge pickup.

I won't have time to really sit down and listen to the tracks at home on my killer system until this weekend, but I'll let you all know what I come up with after that.

Kudos to ACME for putting out a first rate tool!!! They really took the time to do it right!

I had a nice strat plus and replaced the pickups with fralin vintage hots, and the difference was astonishing. Only hype I've found that was not (at least partially) "just hype."

Had him rewind a Tele pickup for me - it sounds great.

I also sent him a Strat pickup which was dead - he sent it back, no charge, working fine - just had a break about three turns in. He could have charged me the full monty but didn't.

Good guy, and great pickups.

Just a little update.....

I finally got the Fralin Vintage Hots, and installed them in my 50th Ann. Deluxe.

I purchased them through ACME( http://www.acmeguitarworks.com/index.aspx ), and they prewired a card board pick guard for me with a volume pot mod (Retain the tone of the bridge pickup when you back off the vol.), and also the Blend pot.....Boy if you don't have this...GET IT!!! It opens up a world of different tones!!!

The pickups on their own made a huge differnce over the stock wilkinson noisless w/ S1 switching, but throw in being able to blend in the bridge or neck pickup (depending on what postition you are in on the 5-way).....WOW.

$270 bucks was a lot to spend on a guitar that I just spent 1300 on, but in the end it was well worth it! I'll be able to leave this guitar alone for many years to come!!!

Thanks,
Rick

I have Fralin blues specials from Acme on my American Standard Strat. There is a huge difference between the Fralins and the stock PU's.

I have the baseplate on the bridge pu, I'm not sure what it does, but I like it.
