Hi Men! (and you fearless women)

Is anyone using the Home Studio XL package for recording?
Is it a good investment..does it do what you want...would you point me somewhere else?

It seems like a good deal--149$ with most of the same basic features of Sonar...

Am I being naive`??

Just a guy in need of some guidance!

Thanks in advance

I upgraded from HS2002 to XL this spring. It adds some more DX effects, the DR-008 DXi and a few more loops.

If you have a use for the guitar amp DXi plug in and use ACID loops on a regular basis, I'd say go with XL, otherwise save yourself $50 and just buy HS2002. The DR-008 is pretty much useless IMO. It is not a full drum machine like the one in Sonar - just a drum sample playback synth.

I passed on the upgrade to XL.
I don't care much for the cakewalk effects. I'd rather spend the money on some better quality plugs from a 3rd party developer.

HS 2002 effects??

Brzilian-
Is the effects package in HS 2002 good? are the effects worth using etc..

Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks

Pastor Brian, what are you using now, if anything?

current software

I bought the audiophile 2496 and it came with the free (and very lame)
cakewalk express 8

2 track playback no extras or anything!

I know that Sonar, cubase, vegas etc offer lots more for the home studio, but I am seeking reccomendations!

Reason (or is it recycle?) from propellerhead? anybody know this one?

You need to tell us what you want to do before we make specific recommendations. Reason is good if you want to create loop based music like techno, trance and the like. It has no real multitrack audio recording capabilities whatsoever.

If all you are looking to do is record audio, some MIDI and apply some basic effects, HS2002 will work just fine.

The only thing not in favor of HS2002 is that it can only record 2 audio tracks at a time so it will not work with a card that has more than 1 stereo pair of inputs.

Thanks Brzilian...

I am into acoustic guitar, electric, vocals, bass, drum tracks
mandolin and maybe a little dobro...

Can it record two stereo tracks? or 1 left and 1 right at a time?

will it playback many tracks or just 2 or 4 like some free software?

My audiophile has 2 analog, 2 midi and 2 s/pdif inputs ( I think)--so maybe another software idea?

You are limited to one stereo in and out.
And 24/48 recording.

thanks shagfu-

If I use sonar, does that change at all or is the limitation in my sound card?

Its really a question of $$$ If I can do all that I want to do for less $, I will go with HS 2002

if not...Sonar or something else!

Thanks fellas!

Pastor Brian, be sure you enjoy the "feel" of the Cakewalk program that came free with your card. allthe CW products have a fairly similar feel, quite different I think from some of the other multitrackers out there.

go to www.hitsquad.com and poke around some of the multitrack demos around there. I was pretty confident i wanted to go with HS02 when i ordered it and it suits me just swell.

the effects are generally pretty good, very basic. needs a good compressor. the session drummer that comes with it is good for keeping the beat but otherwise falls short of being programmable. i've found using an SR-16 as a midi trigger and then using soundfonts has given me the best results with HS02. it's really easy.

Where are you 'round Tacoma way? I work in Lakewood and go the the UW there at night.

I stand corrected. For some reason I thought I was using 96KHz in HS2002 - I only have that option with some other softsynths I use as well as on the Audiophile control panel.

Cakewalk doesn't mention it anywhere so that's why I use to think so too. It was either audio options in HS2002 or the audiophile control panel that would keep resetting itself to 44 or 48. That was when I emailed them and asked why it was doing that.

It doesn't bother me too much that it's 24/48. I don't think my system could handle a whole bunch of 24/96 tracks with effects and softsynths anyway. It's a great little sequencer.
