Pinstripes

I agree Pinestripe work great on cheap kits. I am not a fan of them on better quality drums, but on cheap drums they really do work great. :D

on my vistalites that is.. they sound nice on the acrylic shells
just for kicks sometime, put some Controlled Sound (the clear with black dot) heads on your vistalites. you'll dig em if you want that classic 70s sound. :D

$0.02

I bought a Hohner 14" snare and 10" tom for a fiver each, and put Remo's on the snare (Coated Ambassador batter, hazy diplomat snare side) and an Evans on the Tom (G2 batter, no resonant head).
The Snare sounds like a reasonable drum, but the Tom sounds like I'm hitting a balloon!

I've also tried Evans on my proper drums (Pearl MLX, hardly bad drums), and they killed the resonance and playability of the kit.

controlled sound? who are those made by?

i use the hydraulics on toms, emad and emad reso on kick drum, and that new eq2 reverse dot on snare, with a hazy 300 underside.

i order puresound snare wires, i dont know how they are gonna be, for $30...

Controlled Sound

Controlled Sound are Remo CS Heads commonly refered to as "black dot" heads. The CS head has many different forms including the Coated Ambassador with a Dot on the bottom. Many drummers like to use the coated/dot heads on a snare drum.

I hope this helps,

Earl :)

why didnt ya just say black dot :)

i know someone who uses them on a vista set too, thats funny you mention that.

hmm. maybe the next time around i'll check them out.

black dots

Hi TragikRemix:

I have a black dot head on my vistalite kick drum that sounds great. I used to use them on my vistalite toms way back in the 70's, like John Bonham. Okay you now I've been around awhile.

BTW, Tony Williams used to use black dot heads on his drums from the 70's until his death in the 90's. He used it on a maple Gretsch kit for most of those years.

It fun, I was at Guitar Center a few months ago and I ask them if they carried black dot heads and the answer was not at this store. I think it might be time to tey something old again because they are a cool alternative sound, which is focused and punchy.

Earl :)

even though pinstripes aren't the best sounding heads in the world, on a cheap kit i will recommend them every single time, b/c they seem to make bad drums sound better.

that's what they're intended for. the pinstripe itself makes the bearing edge and proper tuning much less important.
