Is you are going for a real dead sounding tom with no ring get them.

I have a set and hated how they sound. I could never get the 10 in tom to sound right. On a rock kit they might sound better.

Drums aren't my number one priority....I play guitar...but I'm getting new hats and skins and I thought they looked interesting.

I've tried various Evans Hydraulics over the years, and just never found one I liked. There very dull sounding to me. By comparison, my ideal heads are Remo Emporer tops, with Ambassador (Tom) or Diplomat (Snare) bottoms. I play Metal too, to give you an idea.

I had a set, and wasn't really into 'em (just too wet/dead for my taste). I'd suggest lookin' into Aquarian Performance II's on top, and Evans genera g1's on bottom...I like the tone that combo makes, but then again, drums are ALL about preference...there really is no "wrong" way to set something up...

Oh god now I'm confused....now I just wanna buy Remo because they make the skin on my banjo!!!

What kinda drums are you putting these heads on.

Certain heads sound better on certain types/sizes of drums.

I had Performance II's on my toms up until this morning. I put Evans G2's on the top and G1's on the bottom and IMO, these heads sound waaaay better than the Performance II's.

We must have VERY different drums....cause the g2's on top sounded like plain ass in a can when I put them on my Tama kit.....then again one thing that's good for something isn't neccessarily good for the other I suppose...

Well I have a Pearl Traget kit....cheap, I know. Trying to make the best of it.

man, just get pinstripes and be done with it. they're very middle of the road in terms of "good sounding heads", but they'll do fine for a cheap kit. get a set of ambassadors for the bottom.

heads like the G1's and G2's (coated or clear) and such on the batter side of things will quite often make bad drums sound worse. i love em (they're WIDE OPEN sounding and have a very wide tuning range), but they're picky about having well-cut bearing edges and whatnot. you may find they're more hassle than they're worth.

even though pinstripes aren't the best sounding heads in the world, on a cheap kit i will recommend them every single time, b/c they seem to make bad drums sound better.

Thanks alot Wade man!

I happen to LOVE the sound of pearl kits BTW...and a drum set is a drum set. If you own it, don't be embarassed of it. It's your baby......rock that shit!

Catch ya on the flip,

No to the Hydraulics. I hate them. Yay for pinstripes, though.

My guitarist has a Pearl Export kit. I put some Remo Pinstripes on them for him, and they sound really good. I'm a Remo Emporer man myself... :D

i put pinstripes (ambassadors on bottoms) on my late 80's/early 90's Exports last summer and was really surprised at how good they sounded. i'd been using evans G2s (on top--G1's on bottom) for years. the G2's are really open sounding and have a wide tuning range and are excellent heads. the pinstripes sound.....well......like pinstripes. ;) i was looking for a different tone out of the drums (more of that 70's era sound) and the pinstripes did that.

on my late 60's ludwig kit, i prefer coated ambassadors--it seems to sing a little better with those on it. i've had pinstripes on there in the past too, and they sound fine, if not a little "damped".

Heads for a Cheap Kit

I would put a good 2 ply head on a student model/cheaper kit. Remo Emperor Coated is my preference, but Emp Clears would work as well.

I find that two ply heads work best on drums with questionable bearing edges and shell make up (i.e., not birch or maple).

I have used the hydraulic heads and they are really dead, like the cardboard box 70's disco sound. But they work well on Ludwig Vistalite drums, being made out of Plexiglas.

I also find that the Evans heads do not last as long as the Remo heads. But, you should always check a Remo head to make sure it has a little bit of tone before buying it. You check this by tapping on the head and listening for a "bah" tone sound. If the head is slack is make a crackling plastic sound, then it will be harder, if not impossible to get in tune. I actually do this with all drum heads I buy, but I find that Remo's sometimes have this problem more than Evans.

I hope it helps.

i use em'. they work great for me.

on my vistalites that is.. they sound nice on the acrylic shells, but sound like shit on maple and birch drums IMO.

if your drums resonate like, well, a piece of fiberglass, they will work good, otherwise they are too dead for anything.
