anybody making jingles?

Hi, I'm starting a company, and my main purpose is to sell jingles and announcements to other businesses. Can anybody tell me how you deal with the copyrights? do you sell the copyright of the song or keep the copyright to yourself? Do you make a contract? I'm thinking of someway of, in case they want to edit the jingle/announcement they have to come to me and can't go with another studio. thanks.

I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do but I think you're talking about starting your own music publishing company i.e. library. If this is the case, copyrights are the least of your worries. It's the licensing rights that you need to be concerned with. If you're working locally and it's your own original music, then no problem, you own all of the rights so you can charge whatever you want and receive all of the money. Also, you can customize the music to meet the client's needs and charge accordingly.

However, if you want to market nationally/internationally then you'll have to register as a publisher with ASCAP or one of the other PRO's and they have certain requirements that must be met in order to qualify.

With regards to music libraries, either working with them or owning one, registering your works with a PRO is the first step then copyrighting.
