I am, as you might know by now with all the posts I have been making about it, going to be buying about $10,000 worth of studio equipment to outfit a new studio I will be having in a few months. Now so far I have pretty much decided to go with a Carillon PC built custom for me. It will have th following specs.
Intel D850M (P4 RDRAM) Motherboard
Intel Pentium IV 2.0GHz
512MB 400MHz RDRAM
20GB Seagate Softsonic
ATA/100 7200 RPM System Drive
80GB Seagate Softsonic
ATA/100 7200 RPM Audio Drive
Plextor 24x10x40 Speed CDRW
Matrox G550 32Mb Dual Head Card
Windows 98 SE
Total Price after tax, and shipping, $1,824.00 (that includes a $100 UPS insurance)
It also has all kind of silent drive casings and a silent power supply, plus silent fans. According to their test results and about 100 people I have spoken to that own one, they are even much much quieter than a Mac and never ever crash. Plus they will be installing the MOTU 1296 PCI card and interface and configuring the whole machine around my Logic Audio Platinum 5 (which they will pre-install and configure to all my midi gear and audio wishes. So basically I just pull it out, plug it in, and record away. (We'll see if that works out.. I doubt it, but it makes for a good marketing campaign!)
Anyway, I am also investing in two Mackie HR824 Near Fields. ($1,070).
Now my real question is... I am going to need a mixer. I originally wanted the Mackie Analog 32 Channel 8 bus console. Mastly because of it's quality and ampunt of inputs. (I love big mixers). BUT, now I have really been taking a look at the Mackie Digital 8 Bus mixer that I never thought I could afford. Now I am buying all of these items from Carillon. They sell complete systems and not just PCs so they are supplying me with the MOTU 1296 and the Mackie HR824s. Now they have given me an official quote for the Mackie Digital 8 Bus console at $6,599.
Now everywhere I have ever looked is selling them for nothing less than $8,400. This is a significant decrease in the price. If it were $300-$500 less then I woldn't think anything of it. but since this is like an $1,800 difference, it leads me to belive that there is something missing from the Digital 8 Bus from Carillon. Now I know that the one I am being quoted comes with no expansion cards. Just the basic mixer. But as I don't have any digital tape machines or ADATS or synchable equipment, I just want the mixer. Now, I don't want to call up Carillon and ask them about this price being so low, because then of course they will say... "Uhmmm Yes Sir, I am sorry we have made a mistke that mixer costs actually $8,400." I mean I am buying a significant amount of stuff from them (over $10,000) so I understand a little dip in the price, but $1,800???
What do you guys think?
