I am trying to record to CD off of a VCR Tape. I found that going direct from the VCR was my best bet. Although since there is no dolby on the CD Recorder and I don't have the newest VCR, I am getting hiss that I can't reduce. I already knew by doing this it would sound like a cassette but the hiss is a bit louder than I am comfortable with.
Is there a device I can purchase to filter the hiss out like Dolby? Thanks for this site , I will be here often. -D

I have had hiss problems with my home recordings and have been able to substantially eliminate the hiss using digital editing on my PC.

This is a potentially expensive alternative, but if you can record from your VCR directly into a computer, or maybe just convert your CD track(s)that you've recorded into wav files using a computer, you can use shareware such as Cool Edit 96 to remove most noise on those wav files without effecting the signals you want to keep.

But then, of course, you'll need software to re-compile the wav files back onto a CD; which requires a CD-R/RW drive on the PC and software like Sonic Foundry Sound Forge with the CD Architect plug-in.

Hope this didn't scare ya; there could be other ways to remove the noise, but doing it on a computer might be the most effective(but definately not cost effective).

Bill , thanks for your wisdom and insight.
I will have to look into the items you mentioned. I don't have any jacks on the back of my tower so I imagine that hooking up anything to it would not be an option. I do have a cd-rw , although I had trouble with it working for me and then out of frustration got the CD-R for the stereo (much easier and less stressful for me at least). I read about Spin Doctor for the CD-RW and it is supposedly able to take out hiss, or reduce it and also correct skipping on albums....does anyone know if this would be worth getting and how effective it may be?
anyway, I am very happy about this site and thanks again Bill,I really appreciate it.
