I've been looking at components for a new computer im building soon for recording and general use (interenet, schooll etc. with possible dual boot). I've been checking out an Asus P4PE Black Pearl Edition Motherboard. It looks pretty solid and claims to be the only Mobo to truely support DDR333 PC2700 ram. Anyone have any thoughts on this motherboard?

I've been using ASUS boards exclusively for years.
Im currently using the P4PE-L with no problems or concerns.
Im not sure what the black has to do with it, but Im quite sure it will serve you well.

Hard to go wrong with any Asus board.
There are cheaper alternatives but Asus is a safe bet.
I've used Asus happily for years
If you're willing to pay the premium for a special edition of a motherboard is up to you.

Look into the nForce2 boards from ASUS. The new ones that support the 400 FSB are coming out now. This will put a nice price drop into the older boards.

Check the review on www.amdmb.com for the details. A wealth of good information is on this site. Very active board.

Avoid boards powered with VIA chipsets. Get an nForce or an Intel... the VIA just plain suck. Computer consulting is my business, and I have much experience with VIA sucking.

I'm a proud user of the ASUS P4C800...800 MHz front side buss...fast,fast,fast. No regrets.

Re: Asus p4pe

ive got an asus p4pe, and the thing is awesome. couldnt be happier with it. ive got a pentium 4 (2.4 ghz) processor on the thing and it flies, even with large stuff like video. i got a sweet deal on it too, at Newegg.com. there are cheaper motherboards, but with the new models that Asus is coming out with, it should lower the price a bit. cant go wrong with Asus.

Ditto - ASUS is my favorite brand, even if the last two mobos I bought were from someone else. Probably a good choice.

Howyadoin,

I've got a P4PE (not BP) in my DAW, and it's been great except that the first one I got was bad out-of-box, which sucked rather heavily :) I stripped the BIOS of all the onboard peripherals except the sound and 10/100 NIC, and it's really solid running XP and Cubase SX with the Delta 1010.

If you want to build a dedicated DAW box, I'd recommend the Intel 845PESV motherboard. Onboard 10/100, SoundMAX audio, USB and that's about it. Same chipset as the P4PE.

Some of the ASUS stuff is weird, like that goofy onboard Molex connector for the extra 12VDC input and programmable voice prompts for POST. Also be advised that there is a lingering but sporadic issue linked to ASUS's temperature monitoring diodes that causes hangups at cold boot. I haven't seen this myself, but there are quite a few reports on the ASUS fanboy sites.

I like ASUS products a lot; the K7V that ran my Athlon 750 was the most solid Win98 system I've ever seen. The A7V and A7V133 on the other hand, I know a lot of people that cursed those boards :)

I'm sure you'll be happy with the P4PE-BP, it's a nice, versatile motherboard.

Epox rules my studio roost of 8 systems, 5 running over 2000mhz (AMD) of course, the big board mkers have let QC go down in the rush to fill the market IMHO, MSI, ABIT and ASUS are dealing with chipsets combos that don't config properly besides the capasitor issues found today, so make sure you read quite a few "forum" reviews, not web site reviews, as we all know, if a web site tells the truth and bashes a boards review, no more hardware from that maker...

it isn't brain surgery, www.amdmb.com forums has an extensive board list...

at present the N force 2 chipset is the fastest but i've read the Via KT600 beats it but there not in full production yet so finding one might be a task...

as for me, the KT266a and KT333 or 400 work very well, with Epox that is... if your going intel i've read the 845G chipsets are the fastest, but cost more, unlike AMD :)
