Any thoughts on how this set-up sounds? improvements?

Mic->Microphone Cable -> Tascam Usb Unit -> Usb cable -> Computer

1) I want whatever is going to give me a good sound but won't get to complicated. Any ideas of things to add or change would be appreciated.
2) What's the easiest recording software to master and use?

Sound is much more than your hardware. Hardware IS important; what kind of mic, preamps, etc, but the room also plays a big role. Are you in a garage ? a bedroom? The cables (unless they're complete crap) play little into the equation.

wow, posting here has really brought back some of my old skills and knowledge. Like this little nugget:
Rule of thumb = for best quality sound start from the source and work your way to the end. This would be something like Mic --> Cable--->preamp--> mixer (or insert/mixer) --->tape with variations of course.

Sound slike your set up is on the level, but a commonly overlooked component is the mic cable itself. That $10 twenty footer from GC is not a Monster, and there is a difference.

That $10 twenty footer, if it's in good shape, is 99.9% of a Monster cable in real world terms. There are many things that effect the final sound of a setup and cables are one of the more insignificant links in the chain.

Monitoring, acoustic balance in the environment and good signal processors all come way before cabling.

If I hear a crackle, the cable goes. If I don't, it stays.

That might be true for yourself, but I find that it made a huge difference when I went from a $10er to a canare starquad - audible difference between the two with a much higher quality sound.

But yes, the room and mic placement makes a bigger difference.

Its always been my philosophy that if you put der sheisse in, thats what comes out. Don't get me wrong, I don't use monster either. Im not made of duckets, I use the $5 one from radio shack, after splicing the wire and adding some cotton thread for insulation.

I aggree that all those other things come first,as they impact your sound greater, you will notice i said "a commonly overlooked". Im not saying better cables will make your mix the greatest, but a quality signal path is a happy signal path.
