Any suggestions for mics?

I always recommend a pair of dynamic omnis as a good starting point. Easy to use and place and your recordings will sound like your music. But nobody ever listens to me and they always start with a cheap condenser mic. Hard to use and place. Strident in the upper mids. Picks up everything in the room you don't want on your recordings.

Per mic / channel?

How many drums? Which is the main issue IMO. 5 drums + 3 cymbals + .... Even at $50 a mic, that's $400, not including stands and cables.
