Want to make my own external soundcard. Anybody have specs?

Making? Sound cards are fairly complex beasts. You're not going to be handsoldering PCBs together with individually bought controller chips. I doubt VIA will sell less than a quantity of 1000 Envy24 chips to any individual.

Hmm, that's gotta be a first. Never seen anyone suggest a DIY Soundcard. Honestly, I think it would be soooooo not worth it. The hardware part of it is one thing, but then there's writing the driver, which teams of code writers take months, years, and sometimes never do get it right. I'm not saying it couldn't be done, but it would be a big, big project that would require a major investment of your time and energy, and probably as much money as just buying one of the many good soundcards available without the headaches.

it shouldn't be that difficult, no more than making your own cpu ;)

While you're at it, why don't you build me a new vga card and a couple sticks of RAM. I'm sure you're cabable of it.

if you used a company's chip, could it be done, at least partially? say, for example that you used M-audio's sound processor card (however it works) and their drivers, could you replace the rest of the components such as the A/D converters imputs, wiring, etc.... Not that i would ever try such a thing, i'm just curious.
