any recording interfaces with built-in preamps?

Why don't you go to any of the catalog sites and look. In fact presonus makes a "firebox" which I think is the 2 pre version of the firepod.

didn't get any "sounds good" rewards or anything....

how do I check if it has a built-in preamp? does it say it explicitly or is it in some technological jargon that I wouldn't understand

It'll say usually if not just look for the trademark xlr/1/4" combo jacks. Also try not to put much into what reviews say. If there's a return policy then buy it try it and if it sucks send it back.
