I just upgraded my computer to Vista so I could run the 64bit version of Sonar.
The first thing I'm finding out is that 3 of the 4 Vista programs don't even include the 64 bit OS you have to purchase it as an upgrade.

Any one out there using a 64bit processor with Vista 64 OS?
Just wondering what type of performance boost you seeing.
I would like to know what type of cards or devices/drivers your using.
I plan on trying out the beta drivers at M-Audio for my 1010s, anyone
experimented with those yet? How much memory are you using with it?

performance boost, thats REALLY funny. Not goinna happen.

Oh, and M-Audio has no vista drivers. And their 64 bit drivers on their website don't actually work.

As of right now, only RME, MOTU, Lynx, and Echo have Vista drivers. Ive tested RME and MOTU. They both work, but there is definately a performance hit in Vista. No way I'd use it in a produciton environment or as my only computer.

I talked to Dave at Motu, and Dave at sweetwater. The Motu drivers are running perfectly with Vista. I ordered an Ultralite for my Vista machine and a Tascam FW1080 for another XP machine.

The Tascam is a pretty sweet little unit, Tascam notified me they will have Vista driver soon.

Yes, I am running Vista Ultimate 64 and Sonar 64 v6.2. Soundcard is a LynxIIA running ASIO drivers which were written for Windows XP64 but work in Vista.

It's been a ragged edge experience for a couple of weeks now but things are settling in. Sonar is not running completely glitch free but I am honing in on optimal settings. I still am not ready to record clients because it's a little erratic with glitches and pops. Comes with running beta drivers I guess.

Just though I should give you a view before you step out in the 64 bit universe.

What compelled you to jump on board with Vista so soon

Just bought a Athlon X64 system and thought I might as well go with Vista.

I've been told a couple companies have fully compatible Vista drivers so I should have a Motu inferface in any time now. I will start out with the 32bit version and switch to 64 when there is a reason too.

Well? Anyone?

Boost is hard to measure, I will say that both processors are running under 15% even under the heaviest of loads. I just figured out the pops and clicks issue which was an errant VST plug in. So playback is much smoother with more synths running. In my case Art Vista Grand, Atmosphere, EZ drummer and a couple of Sonar synths, this is almost 2.5GB of RAM and no hiccups. These are some pretty heavy hitter synths.

So yeah, it's nice having the ability to load all this stuff, build some complex aux buss structures and get no dropouts. Plus the sound is just amazing in 64 bit using multiprocessor and 64 precision engine.

Middleman, did you have any problems detecting inputs and outputs with your Lynx?

I just got my Vista compatible Motu 828MKII last night installed it in my new Vista Athlon X64 X2 system. I noticed it did not pickup all he I/Os from the Motu. I would pick up some then it would pickup other then it wouldn't pickup any.

I did at one time :D get it to play a 2 track mix but it started to break up near the end.

The more I tryed to fine tune the clock settings the less it picked up. The closet I got to it sounding close to right was with MME settings. When I tryed WDV it started sinking. I'm just trying to use the 32bit version of both programs at this time.

I suppose I could try another FWcard I'm just using the one that is built into the computer.

I'm not sure that the manufacturing world was quite as prepared for Vista, a long awaited, long delayed, apparent yawn of an OS -- at least not like the jump to XP.

The launch was stop started so many times, I think that manufacturers kind of adopted a wait and see attitude towards it.

Given the lukewarm response in general, and the horror stories that seem to follow after the sentence "I just upgraded to ...", I'm going to adopt the same stance as the manufacturers.

I run a dual Opteron system, and it's smoking fast -- and as stable as rock -- now -- even in a 32 bit environment. I'm just not willing to trade nanosecs of response time for stability.

I'll wait until the techno-massacre ends, and they clear away the debris ...

Kev-

I would use WDM or ASIO drivers. Not detecting ports could be either an install problem or firewire port issues (make sure you have the latest drivers for that too)

Rename the Aud.ini file and then restart Sonar, that's where the names come from (or you could just edit this file to correct things but if there is a detection issue, this won't help). Aud.ini should rebuild itself and it may pick up those other i/o ports. If this does not help you can always rename the aud.ini file back to its orginal name, no harm done.

Best guess in you situation, hope this helps.

The wierd thing is I can't find the aud.ini doing a search. I believe I found something in a Sonar menu regarding it but it was empty. I can't figure out why it was partially detected but not now.

I'll pickup a new TI chipset card and install everything then reinstall.

Thanks, Randy

Well could not find anything locally with the TI chipset. I did find an Adaptec that looks like it has been discontinued bought it anyway. I was told that they are suppose to be a very good card for firewire. But who knows if it will even run on Vista.
I guess I'll know when I plug it in tonight.

Middleman, I've been struggling all week with getting this Motu to work with Vista and Sonar. I thought I had it licked Wednesday night seemed to record 4 tracks without any drop outs. Last night I went back to add to them and it all started over again small drop outs, pitch changes etc. I started changing sample rates and buffers and got a couple decent clean tracks. If they don't play back right tonight I'm gonna send the Motu back and try a RME.

I noticed this quirk with Vista and Sonar. If I move a screen around or click on a tab or use sliders you can hear it if you have audio running. It must be because Vista is using huge amounts of RAM for video cards. I went in and changed it to use the miminum display quality and the sound cleared up.

There is much improving that needs to be done looks like it is goning to be a long wait.

The screen noise is your video driver because I had this issue and it disappeared when I loaded the latest NVidia drivers.

Pitch changes are a clocking issue. Did you try changing ffrom Freewheel to Chase lock or vice versa?

Yep, I just got a update notification from HP about new Nvidia being available a couple of hours ago. So will this allow you to turn of video performance a couple notches as well with no ill effects in Sonar?

If the Motu doesn't start performing properly soon it will be on its way back to Sweetwater Monday morning. I originally ordered the Ultralite but subside to Rack Envy and went for the 828.

I've yet to find a TI chipet FW card locally Motu recommend this and the Algere which is built into my MB.
