sometimes when i just kinda wan a "thumpy" kick, i'll use a medium or slow attack on a gate to kill some of the transient.

it sounds like i hear other people do this on some things on the radio, but i can't be sure.

ever tried it? i kinda like the way it sounds (given the material and what not)

You mean a slow attack on the gate so that it takes it's time to open, therefore cutting out the initial "thwak"? Never tried that. Might be cool. Do you find it's better than compressing or just different? Or do you do both at the same time?

and yes, i do both. gate first.
i find it helps for when i just want a rounder kik sound, or if i (somehow) have recorded a little more attack than i want.

i try it every time i gate a kick or snare, usually doesn't sound good to me, but sometimes just cutting a little bit off can sound okay.
