I don't really get how an instrument that requires significant dexterity with BOTH hands has a left/right version....

And I'll also point out that when learning the guitar, it's your NON-dominant hand that has the harder time of it at first, and probably all the way through your guitar playing life, as well - damn sight harder to get those little pink things contorted into position and pressing down correctly than it is to do a downstroke with a plectrum when you're a boon (that's a leftie noob NTW..)

Seems to me you lefties have a natural advantage that over us righties that you give away by playing a "left-handed guitar"...

Are there any other left-handed instruments? You don't see reversed pianos anywhere... :guitar: ;)

Help me to understand... :D

Just sayin'

As per my previous post, which way round to hold the guitar wasn't an option, even at age 7. Anyway, I'd say the rhythm required in the picking position is, at first at least, the more difficult [hand] job.

Some people are lucky to be a blank slate in the beginning and choose which hand does what, but not all of us are so blessed. If you hold a guitar the left handed way, do you think you'd be able to play it, or does it just feel totally wrong? With a right handed guitar, I'm in the latter camp.

QUOTE Armistice: "I don't really get how an instrument that requires significant dexterity with BOTH hands has a left/right version...."

That statement blows my as a left handed guitar player. I dont think its as simple as just deciding to play right handed when you buy your first guitar. Its about how natural you feel with the instrument. When i got my first guitar, i knew without a doubt, that i was a left handed guitar player. Try to play on a lefty, and you will "get how an instrument that requires significant dexterity with BOTH hands has a left/right version".

I think it's about the dominant hand keeping the rhythm.

The funny thing is there are plenty of what are fairly intricate things us lefties are pretty much forced to do righty. Like keys. I carry my keys on my right side and almost always use them with my right hand.

But hand tools like pliers, tin snips, channel lock pliers--- all left handed. Have tried for years to develope the dexterity to use tools with either hand and it just doesn't work out. It's doable, but it's not natural, and just doesn't feel right.

And cutting flexible metal conduit with a hacksaw. You have to cut that right-handed because of the way the stuff is manufactured.

It's a right handed world, there's no doubt about it.

What we need are more Ned Flanders

It is a right handed world. We lefties get along no different as far as im concerned. What we need is a few less ignorant righties. Questions like "how do you use a can opener?"...etc. They just dont make you sound too smart lol. As far as guitars go, its just more natural and feels better.
