Hi,
I have seen guys (1-2) play at bars and have music behind them that has the guitar and vocal parts removed from poular songs.
I was wondering if anyone knew the name of the equiptment that does this or if it is possible that I can do it from my computer.I have found midi files but they sound real cheesy. thanks

A good friend of mine has something called the "Vocal Eliminator". Believe it cost him 3 or 4 grand. Apparently works quite well.

ROTFL! I have the "vocal eliminator" too and so do many of you here...it's buried in the menus of Cool Edit 96 (which I think is still free) and several other digital audio programs. It does the same thing the hardware version does, namely invert the phase of one track and algrebraically sum the two together, losing whatever was mixed to the middle which is usually the vocals.

Of course, if you insist on an even better solution, hang on, Dragon's got a real hot goodie for you (and as usual, it's free):

This is a DirectX plugin! And there's even a Winamp version on that page, too.

While you're at it, that's a terrific site for lots of other free MIDI and audio software, see http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/audio.htm for all of them.

Emeric, all I gotta say is that I hope that friend is not really you! And if you want to keep him as a friend, don't tell him about this one :)

Hey Dragon,

NO it is not me! :) This guy is an elvis impersonator - I have to put together some backing track CD's for him. Thanks for the link to vocal eliminator plug-in, I may give that a whirl.
