Usually, this time of year you'll see GC blowing something out for ridiculously cheap.

Anyone see anything worth noting this year?

.

For Christmas, my wife got me the MXL 990 and 991 for $49.99. I haven't had a chance to do a shootout yet, but for that price I don't care if they sound bad, there's bound to be something that'll come up to use them on. I'm not sure if the deal is still on, but that was just last week that she bought them.

Musicians Friend (and Sweetwater actually) has the Blue Ball series (the 8-Ball (which used to be $200), the Kick Ball and Snowball (USB)) all for $100 and the E-Mu 1212m for $100.
AudioMidi.com is running a 10% over $200 sale until the 31st (w/ the promotional code)

I'm betting...that it will be a little later before you see the "big deals". I was watching on a news report regarding this year's holiday retail business reports. It indicated that there was a lower trend in actual purchases and a higher trend in "gift cards" and A LOT of the gift cards haven't been redeemed yet. Retailers are getting savvy to the after holiday shopping spree that a lot of us get sucked into and are holding out. Retailers don't get to "realize revinue" until after the gift cards are redeemed for actual merchandise exchange.

On the other hand, there are good deals out there but you'll probably find them at the local store level in the way of over stock. Big wharehousing companies might not feel the same pressure to move product unless they've got product that will become obsolete or they can't move later in the year. Clothing for example...retailers will most likely be motivated to move some of the seasonal goods but electronics...not so much.

That's my view.

Yup. I got a Hammond XK-2 used for $450.

Excellent condition. Sounds nice like a Hammond should.

where's that "dropping jaw" emoticon? man, that's a GREAT deal. congrats! i'm REALLY jealous!

i'm heading to GC on the 31st, which is my wife's birthday and she wants to go to richmond for pizza, so i get to go to GC while we're there. i'm hoping to find a cheap les paul, strat or jazz bass. but i might get surprised. ;)

cheers,
wade

The 990/991 for $50 deal is over...and I'm pissed because I wanted to pick up a pair of them and dump the 990's

I am not a keyboard player, hence, not too much real excitement, but I do "noodle" my own key tracks and I have not been able to get that "Hammond" sound from my Kurzweil. The Hammond just cannot be duplicated easily. I do like the fact that it has midi in and out for use with other sound modules.

I'm not a keyboard player either, and i too do noodle my own keyboard parts. midi is really nice for that, and especially for being able to "fix" things after the fact. mostly i've been using the B4 VST instrument plugin to handle hammond-like tones, but it's not too terribly convincing. i'd LOVE to get my hands on one of those XK's.

that's a great score and i'm quite jealous!

cheers,
wade

I think NI B4 kills the XK-2's sound.

E-mu Monitors

Not a mic but I just bought a pair of E-mu PM5 monitors for $200 yesterday at the local GC. Normally, go for $500 a pair so pretty good deal if you are in the market. They sound great for $200 IMHO.

Excellent points, all I would add is that those guys are on quotas and if you catch them at the end of a quarter just short of them ; they are then usually the most pliable! ;)
