Howdy all, I have a friend who happened to visit here, and after reading for a while, determined this must be an all male avocation. At least the building side. Well I let him know that I see female AE's respond on the ProSound Web, but he can't believe there is no women interested in building their own studio. I bet him $5 there isn't. Although, I've never met a female carpenter either. There was a gal at the mill who was as sharp as any guy out there, but then again, thats not audio related. Anyone ever hear from any females here that build? No gender war, just wondering. I've got $5 says there isn't. :p

hi rick, how goes the studio?i am going to disagree with you on this one.i have met lots of female craftswomen that were excellent at
their chosen trade.i have also known a lot of female musicians
that were amazing.a combination of the two i have yet to meet.
ladies seem to have a better eye for details than us men-folk.i think there could be at least three ladies out there that have built their own.

Rick,

I'll disagree too. I helped a woman with acoustics advice last month when she renovated her New York studio. I don't know if she did all of the construction herself, but I know she did much of it. And when I was searching for lumber mills to cut the wood we use for RealTraps, one of the places was headed by a woman who was very sharp with all aspects of wood working. She also was extremely cute. And she had a number of hand drums and other wood percussion instruments she made herself on display in her office, and she played the guitar too. I was truly sorry that her price quotes were not the lowest! :)

My wife helped me tilt up walls for the drum room, and she helped me move a lumber drop into the studio.
Does that count?

Hi guys, thanks for the replys. There probably are female studio owners. I've never met one period, let alone one that did it themself. Or read any posts here by any. I've read posts by female AE's on other forums, but don't know if they built their studios themself. I only respect the ones that do. If they paid others to build it, that don't mean shit to me. They just have more money than the average homestudio builder.
Anyway, wasn't trying to raise anyones dander, and by the way. Who do I owe now?:D Hey Michael, yea that counts!!! Tell her shes doin a great job, and that you'll advance her to engineers aide when its done. She'll advance you to sanitary engineer.
:D :D

Hahahahahahahah! Thats a good one sheppard. They might have a better eye sometimes, but try and build it. And actually, all the women architects who designed crap for macys that we would build, had their head up where the sun don't shine. We had to constantly tell em you couldn't build their designs. At least the way they drew it. I'm a DETAILER by profession Sheppard, and have worked along side of quite a few female "draftpersons" who thought they knew how to build. None of them lasted over a week. They were a joke in the mill. Especially the ones who came from "interior design" schools. The mill foreman used to really get on their case for not having a clue how to build. He'd point out the obvious first. Like 3/4" dados in 3/4" material. Or cutting a panel 6' x 11'. Ha! What did she think they would cut it from? Even the gal in the mill used to laugh. Especially at the gal who didn't want to go in the mill cause she might get dirty. Ha! The ONLY way to learn be a builder is to build. Not just draw it. In my case, it was 10 yrs in the mill first. You have to know what a machine is capable of first, before you can think out how to machine stuff for assembly. Even the gal in the mill was afraid of the large shaper, which had 6" knives, which if you didn't lock down TIGHT, could cut you in half if one came loose. Try and machine a OAK window jamb in an arch, and its 8' in diameter and 9" thick. Milling stuff like that is downright scary. Or the CNC. Or the sticker. She wouldn't run any of em cause she was afraid of em. But she was a hell of an assembler. Fast and accurate. But nailguns and screwguns arn't scary. Thats building.

Hahahahahahahahaha! Already got one:D Its the black melamine studio shit she don't like in the house. But she gets the rest of it, so MY space is what ever I want it to be!!! Besides, her ebay "shabbychic" stuff is what fills every room. Not mine.

PS. Who is Riley?

Who's Riley? Who's Riley???

OOPS!!! Sorry. Hey, I like the chord, your name too!!:D Hey c7sus, ever hear of the 60 chord system?

Rick,
I'll have to agree with! Not to the point of saying there are NONE out there but they're probably very few. I've never even heard of a woman engineer that framed her control room, put up the rock, wires some cans or whatever. A band I was in redorded once where the AE was a woman and she was great! But she didn't lay a finger on the construction process of it all.
Disclaimer.... I'm not paying part of the $5 if we lose!:D

Hahahahaha! Hey, rushfan33, I hope no one took me wrong on this. I was just curious. I took a college recording class, and a good 1/2 the class was female. Only one seemed " in tune" with the scene. Oh well, more ebay for us!:D I'll fess up the $5 though if some gal speaks up. More power to her. Shes at the right place anyway! I'll give her credut that:D

My 33 year old daughter, if she decided that's what she wanted to do, would be just fine - Being as egotistical as I sometimes am, I credit at least part of that to the fact that, unlike the majority of female kids in the world, she was NOT raised being told she wasn't able to do things - in fact, with us living in the country, both my kids were told that if they wanted to DRIVE to school instead of riding the bus, they got to do their own car maintenance. I've had my daughter come into the house from 35 degree weather, holding a greasy car part, asking my advice on how to get it dis-assembled to replace something.

She also had some boyfriends that didn't know an air cleaner from a muffler, poor kids -

I've always expected my kids to be able to do ANYTHING that's humanly possible, assuming they WANT to, and I think the LACK of that attitude is one of the worst sins a parent can commit.

OK, soapbox dis-assembled, moving on... Steve

ever heard of the "powers that be?" Its real.

Howdy Steve:D How are you. Haven't heard any replys from you lately. I thought maybe I said something offending to you somewhere along the line. Yea, I know, I'm not man enough to piss ya offl, but you haven"t responded since you threatened to kick my fanny for not moving.:p

Well, if you read my thread about tearin down the studio, you'd know I'm on my way soon. The fight with the DA was absolutely mind boggling, and I now know how the system works. It ain't nice, and neither are they. Heres a story for you to illustrate what is going on in this state. Please accept my apology for hanging my laundry here,
but someone needs to tell others in the same boat what they are up against.

As my attorney said, there are HIGHER POWERS. He meant it. They litterally stole $29,000 from me and laughed. I had the option of fighting futher, but it would have cost me another $5k in attorney fees, and would have jeapordized me getting out of the system FOREVER. They don't fight fair. As it turned out, my attorney had overheard the FEMALE judge in the back room, say she was going to make an example of me. Ha! Imagine that. Impartial. Thats a joke. He called his best friend at the last minute. His friend is the guy that assigns temporary judges to cases, and he sent a MALE judge in on the last court date. This judge had to reprimand the DA in person, to keep the DA from getting the lein money from my house. They fought like hell for 15 minutes over $30,000. Finally, the judge told the DA to sit down and keep quiet. He then ordered the money split and distributed to my kids and ex-wife. My ex jumped up and asked why it was not ALL given to her, to distribute. The judge exclaimed, "because I don't trust you!!!" Hahahahahahaha!!!!   Well, now that I know how things work here, (and how many guys are getting financially and emotionally screwed is another story) I will leave this state never to return. I am no longer nieve.

Sorry for the rant. Right now the emotional scars from 20 yrs of dealing with the DA are still sore. And most of them are women. Didn't mean to drag my shit in here, but I suggest to ANYONE who is under the thumb of the DA in their state, for child support arrears, to IMMEDIETLY get an attorney and ask for an ACCOUNTING> They don't like that. If you wait, you will loose. BECAUSE THE SYSTEM IS PREJUDICE AGAINST MEN! I am living proof.

Do you know that when my attorney asked the judge for an accounting from the WELFARE POOL, the DA had the audacity, to say "its irrelevant your honor." We feel that Mr. Fitzpatrick in NOT entitled to know how we spend his money!!!!! Hows that for an illustration of the "powers that be". A thief in any other terms is still a thief. It ended up with the judge forcing them to show me how much they paid my ex wife. They paid her $18k out of $55k they garnished from my wages over time. But to get the information, we had to make a deal with the DA, first, not to fight any further, and to NOT tell my ex wife, so she wouldn't go after the balance. Ha!! They KEPT it. I don't care. She didn't get it cause she was too busy trying to screw me and didn't even think to ask them how much they had collected from me already. Trouble is, the judge gave me 60 days to sell my house to pay the lein to my ex, or they would ADD an additional $30k to the lein, WITH INTEREST since the day of my divorce. I'm not going to let that happen. I put the house on the market the next day.

OK I'm done. No more personal stuff here. I just hope this story helps others though, cause this system is FUCKED UP!!!! Child support my ass. My kids never saw it.

Well Steve, sounds like you have a daughter that can take care of herself. You must be proud. But from knowing what little I do about you, its a no-brainer!! Wish my daughter had the same skills. Its usually" Dad, can you change my oil:rolleyes:
Ok, gotta go now.

One last Amen - Think like a hunter, this will make sense IMMEDIATELY -

"Bureaucrats - 2 a day, 5 in possession" (Overlimits will cheerfully NOT be prosecuted...)

BTW, I was down (literally) for two weeks with pneumonia, went thru 2 full courses of Amoxycillin before I could use the other 90% of my lungs, STILL fighting sinus, total crappy time about 7 weeks - not sure what the fuck we imported from Asia this time, but I'm willing to forward it to Iraq, Libya, Syria, etc.

Useful old adage: Two moves is as good as a fire - Good luck on the re-squat, man - later... Steve
