Any Bass Compressor recommendations?

I'd like to know of any good bass guitar compressors out there. I've heard of the one by Digitech but are there any others that will give a clean even level on the bass. I'd like to tame the boominess on the low strings if possible.
 
The first thing that comes to mind are the Electro Harmonix compressor stomp boxes. The full-plate-voltage tube Black Finger and its solid-state brother, the White Finger.
 
any one ever use the digitech pedal?

Is it worth the $100. retail they ask for it?
It says it has dbx compression in it.....

for live or recording?

Either way if it were me, I'd compress after its recorded, or let the sound man live compress out front to fit the mix.

I would not ever use a pedal compressor for bass guitar.
 
Others will disagree, but I love the sound of a Joemeek compressor on my bass tracks. You can get the Joemeek MC2 for as little as $200, I believe. That's the unit I have. I also run vocals through it, not for transient control as much as the color it imparts....
 
I've got the BlackFinger, and love it. There's no coloration, there are choices between a lamp and a diode compression, Capable of slight taming to total crushing. I've used it to vocals and guitars too.
I think I'll get an other one just to have a stereo-pair, if needed.


What I beat myself about is, that I've kind forgot about it...and just record without compressing..:confused:
 
In the rack, I would pick up a used DBX 160x. They have been used on a lot of albums for this very purpose.
 
That guy totally missed the point of why there's a lamp in the Black Finger in his review...
