the term "backpacker" camr from the days when independant emcees would walk around with backpacks of cds/demos amd sell them.

style wise... its a little more 'intelligent' (meaning, they cover thought provoking topics)
its poetic, metaphorical, abstract, councious. etc.
they also do just straight rip shit.

one of the reasons i was askin was to see how people look at it

for instance, most folk around my way consider UNDERGROUND hip hop as NON-BACKPACKER. ACTUALLY, ALMOST EVERY UNDERGOURND ARTIST I KNOW OF IN THIS AREA IS A GANGSTA RAPPA (IT SUX@!@@@!!!)

AS FOR ME, I LIKE BACKPACKA HIP HOP - ALTHOUGH I THINK THE MOST NOTABLE ARTISTS ARE OFTEN TIMES MORE ABSTRACT WITH COMPLICATED DELIVERY STYLES THAT AT TIMES MAKE THEIR CRAFT LESS APPEALING -- THAT IS -- LESS APPEALING TO THE GENERAL "DUMB-DOWN"" MARKET BETTER KNOWN AS RADIO/MTV

i dont listen to mainstream hip-hop anymore.
i guess its different for where people are from.
Like, if i tell someone in my city that i listen to underground hip-hop, those that are aware underground hip-hop exists, will understand what, and who im talking about.
